Thierry Henry blasts Todd Boehly for the errors made by Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah
Thierry Henry has slammed Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly over the Premier League changes he has suggested and taken a swipe at the American’s lack of knowledge over his own club.
The billionaire has faced an enormous backlash this week after suggesting the traditional three-up-three-down relegation format should be replaced by a four-team tournament instead, while he also proposed a North vs South All-Star match.
During a lengthy chat at the SALT conference in New York, Boehly also spoke about his plans for Chelsea’s academy and mistakenly claimed that both Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah had been developed by the west London club.
‘We have one of the best academies in the world,’ said the Los Angeles Dodgers owner.
‘So if you look at what our academy has developed, our academy has developed Mo Salah, Kevin De Bruyne, more recently Tammy Abraham, Reece James, Mason Mount, Trevoh Chalobah.’
But De Bruyne and Salah did not come through Chelsea’s academy, instead joining for sizeable fees from Genk and Basel at the ages of 21 and 22 respectively.
Henry felt that faux pas was incredibly telling and aimed a little dig at Boehly over the gap in knowledge he displayed, as well as slamming the other ideas he had proposed and outright rejecting the notion that European football could learn from American sports.
Reacting to Boehly’s suggestions on CBS Sports, Henry said: ‘Did he say a lesson? A lesson? What’s that supposed to mean? What are they trying to teach? A lesson? Are you a teacher or something?’
He continued: ‘The comment about De Bruyne and Mo Salah… just learn your own lessons and then come back and teach us something.’
When it was put to Henry that Boehly seemed to have really ‘irritated’ him, the Frenchman replied: ‘No he did that himself. Did I say that? He did.’
Expanding on why he has such disdain for the ideas, Henry explained: ‘I don’t like them because this is Europe and it doesn’t work like that.
‘Teams go up and down. All-Star game for what? I wouldn’t have liked to have [played in one]. Maybe [the public would like it] but you ask me and nope.’
