Pep Guardiola may not utilize January transfer window
Pep Guardiola says Manchester City will not be strengthening their squad in the January transfer window.
City reported record revenues and profits for 2021-22, of £613million and £43.2m respectively. Guardiola was asked about that and the financial backing of the owners standing City in good stead should they need to bring in new players.
But City’s manager said: ‘We are not going to strengthen the squad in January. We have the squad we have, we are pleased with that, that is all.’
Guardiola was also keen to stress City chief executive Ferran Soriano is ‘the boss’ on the club’s financial matters.
And when asked if he was surprised by a statement from Liverpool’s owners Fenway Sports Group saying it would ‘consider new shareholders if it was in the best interests’ of the club, he said: ‘I’m not the person to ask this, I’m not the right one to answer you. I’m not a CEO, I try to be as good a manager as possible, that’s all. And of course I’m not going to talk about other clubs.’
Guardiola confirmed England star Kalvin Phillips, sidelined after a shoulder operation in September, will be a substitute for tonight’s Carabao Cup clash with Chelsea.
Kyle Walker, who has been recovering after having groin surgery last month, will not be involved in the game. Both players are in a race against time to make the England squad for the World Cup.
