Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey expected to silence critics in Wales vs. England match
Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey are being backed to silence their critics when Wales face England tomorrow after struggling to make an impact on this World Cup.
Wales face almost certain elimination after taking one point so far, following up a draw against the United States with a 2-0 loss to Iran.
Bale, 33, and 31-year-old Ramsey have failed to live up to their reputations but Swansea midfielder Joe Allen believes it is unfair to blame the talismanic duo for Wales’ woes ahead of their final group game.
‘They’re two incredible players, they are and they have been for our country,’ said Allen.
‘I don’t think there’s anyone else in the squad who’s reached the heights they’re capable of. It’s a huge game coming up.
‘Hopefully, if any criticism has come their way then they’ll be able to answer a few of those critics with a top performance.’
Wales must beat England for the first time in 38 years to stand a chance of making the last 16. And, even then, anything less than a four-goal margin would leave them relying on the USA’s game against Iran ending in a draw.
‘It is not impossible,’ said Allen. ‘It’s a tough task. It’s always uncomfortable when it’s not in your hands and you’re relying on certain things to unfold. But while there’s still a chance it’s really simple for us.
‘We’re fully motivated, fully incentivised into throwing absolutely everything into getting the win. Then, who knows? Hopefully, there’s a chance we can still get us out of this group.’
Allen returned from two months out with a hamstring injury to come on as a substitute against Iran.
‘I’ve mixed feelings in terms of the pride of playing for my country in a World Cup, but a very disappointing performance and result,’ he added.
‘It’s not been a fair reflection of what we’re capable of. That’s been a real disappointment because we can offer so much more, and we will certainly have to do that in the next game.’
Danny Ward is set to start in goal against England after Wayne Hennessey’s red card against Iran.
