Timo Werner to miss World Cup with ankle injury

Timo Werner will not be included in the Germany squad for the World Cup after suffering an ankle injury in the Champions League this week.

The RB Leipzig striker started in the 4-0 win at Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday night but suffered an ankle ligament damage early on, being substituted just 19 minutes into the game.

It has now been confirmed that he will not be fit to travel to Qatar with Germany this month and will be recovering for a number of weeks to come.

The former Chelsea forward tweeted: ‘A very tough one to take for me! I will be out for the next weeks, will miss the World Cup and will have to support @RBLeipzig and @DFB_Team from the couch unfortunately😤😤 thanks for all your messages!’

A club statement from RB Leipzig read: ‘Timo Werner suffered an ankle injury last night in the win over Shakhtar Donetsk.

‘Scans today in Leipzig showed that he has unfortunately torn the syndesmosis ligament in his left ankle and will therefore be out for the rest of 2022.’

Werner had been in good form since returning to RB Leipzig from Chelsea over the summer and had scored in each of his previous three matches before the clash with Shakhtar.

The German had reached nine goals in 16 games across all competitions this campaign for RB Leipzig, but will not be able to add to his international tally this winter.
