[STORY] IMPERSONATION (Episode 14)
Episode 14.
Aunty Haj was already in her late thirties or was it even early forties sef, when she eventually got married.
.
Mouth had long begun to wag.
Groups had long been formed and every single one of them had various theories as to what could most likely have been responsible for this delay.
.
Trust me, it is easier to hear these stories and wonder why a lady could allow these pressure get to them, enough to take certain life uttering decisions a lot of people might consider dumb.
.
You know, the picture always seems clearer to the person looking in, from outside.
And It is easier to utter words like “I don’t care what anyone thinks or says about me, besides, it’s my life to live.”
But honestly, these things are best imagined rather than having to actually be on the receiving end of it. Because when you are, you’d have long started caring about what “these other people” think, before you even realize “how much”.
.
The wedding was a huge success. People really turned up for Aunty Haj.
People came from far and near to grace the occasion, even though most of these people came primarily to be sure; to see with their own eyes that Aunty Haj was really, finally getting married.
.
There was more than enough to eat; drink and even take home.
.
Aunty Haj’s husband was a lady’s man.
At first, it was understandable why he’d caught Aunty Haj’s eyes enough for a conversation, moreso, “marriage”.
One look at uncle T, and most ladies would be spellbound with desires and hunger for a taste of what was best described as a well-seasoned barbecue.
.
Uncle T was a smooth talker too. He had a very great sense of fashion. He is charismatic. He is very popular amongst his peers and carries himself with very high regards.
But besides all of these, uncle T is a very inconsiderate person. He is self-centered, egoistic, he is a cheat, a cheap liar, he has zero sense of humor and also the most arrogant person I know.
.
Uncle T is everything any woman should pray never to come across, even in their desperate search for a life partner.
.
Uncle T makes “remaining single” for the rest of your life a reasonable prayer point, in place of being married to a man, his kind.
.
Uncle T is irresponsible beyond words. He’d “knocked off” a lady while he was a lot younger and had had twins by her. This lady and her parents have been responsible for these children’s upkeep right from birth. These children were already in the university as at the time uncle T got married to Aunty Haj and not once had he played a role in their lives, as “a father”.
.
Uncle T is a pathological liar as well. He’d told Aunty Haj that he is an engineer and also a politician. He’d told Aunty Haj this bogus story about his big plans for her; for them and their unborn children. All of which had no iota of truth to it.
.
Uncle T is “literally” an illiterate.
Uncle T was a Jobless man.
Uncle T was a jobless man that knew the benefits of good packaging.
Uncle T was a jobless man that relied upon his smooth talks and good looks to always open doors for him and in other cases, skirts too.
.
Rumor had it that Uncle T was very diabolical. Did I say rumor? It was later to become a verifiable fact when he’ll often pitch a thing or two to Aunty Haj who in turn, always debunked the thought of it.
.
Uncle T was a staunch smoker; he is also a drunk.
.
I’m sure you’re already wondering why my mother would have gone ahead to consent to this or why Aunty Haj would go ahead to marry such a man, if uncle T was all of these. But I think the real question should be, “is it really possible to have known all of these about someone and still went ahead to marry them?”
.
The date of the wedding had been set and was fast approaching. Their introduction had already been done when uncle T dropped that bombshell on Aunty Haj that night.
Uncle T lied that the money he was expecting didn’t come through and as such, he doesn’t think that the wedding would be able to hold again, as planned.
.
I am sure he’d sensed our desperation and as a result, had gotten everything perfectly planned out because it obviously worked out for him.
.
“Just like your mother once said, K. Not a lot of people believe that Aunty Haj was really getting married. These lots were seriously looking forward to the big day, to finally put their doubts to rest. We were all looking forward to this day too. It was a day we’d all prayed and fasted for and the fact that uncle T appeared like that answered prayer, gave us a sense of joy, different from what we’d ever felt before. I heard they’d gone ahead to make certain findings about uncle T before the marriage but you’ll agree that there was only as much as anyone could have gathered in that short period of time. Besides, how many people can you truly count on these days, to tell you the truth; everything as it is, regardless of how sour it might sound in the ears of the enquirer? For some reason, when it has to do with marriage, no one wants to be fingered out as being responsible for putting asunder even though in reality, those wishing for your marriage to fail are even more in number, compared to those who actually want you to succeed in it…”
.
Kate nodded her head in agreement.
.
“…To save face, my mother went ahead to single handedly sponsor this wedding. Aunty Haj became pregnant shortly after, and yeah, you already know this part of her story, K, because you were there. She lost that baby nine months later in stillbirth.”
