[STORY] IMPERSONATION (Episode 08)

IMPERSONATION by Moshood Avidiime _ AllNaijaEntertainment

Episode 08.

I didn’t need anyone to tell me before I knew that I’d flunked.
.
I’ve always wanted to be the standard for this sort of act but after my performance today, I needn’t be told, to know that I don’t do well taking instructions.

I didn’t need anyone to tell me, to know that I am the least reliable person anyone can count on, to stick to a script.
.
After everything Kate had told me and everything I’d had to go through in preparation for this “showdown”. After my encounter with Kate’s parents; Kate’s family members, it dawned on me that rehearsals are nothing compared to actually going on stage or on set, after the director had screamed “ACTION”.
.
I already knew that Kate wouldn’t be pleased.

I’d not done anything to please her, if at all I’d done anything, it was make her situation worse.
.
Now more than ever, I might just have set in motion, another reason Kate’s parents would believe Kate, unable to keep a man.
.
“After everything, Moshood! How could you? Was this the plan? Is this what I brought you here to do for me? Did you come here to make things worse for me or make it better, ehn? How could you, after everything I’ve explained to you?” Kate went on and on venting, with a lot of displeasing demeanor.
.
“I’m sorry Kate. I know I probably messed up. But I swear it was not intentional. I tried. I honestly tried to stick to the script fa. I truly did. I just can’t explain what happened. I don’t know how your father could have liked me.”
.
“What do you mean you honestly tried to stick to the script but don’t know what happened, Moshood? I intentionally ran to you, to kiss you in front of my father earlier, hoping to see a reaction that depicted you’d done a great job but what did I actually get? A smiley face from a man that I’d expected to look at you; to look at us with scorn? Why was he busy singing your praise all through dinner, instead of trying to avoid any conversation that had to do with a possible future where you and I feature in, Moshood?”

“I don’t know, Kate. I…”

“…where exactly did you guys go to and what did you talk about?” Kate asked, in a manner, demanding a response.
.
I went on to narrate everything that’d played out between Mr. John and me to Kate.

I made sure I left “nothing” out. I needed Kate to point out one thing (if any) I’d done or said wrong because truth be told, as much as Mr. John was very pushy with his demands to get his questions answered and in a particular manner, I don’t really think I did badly at all. Why Mr. John loves me as much as he is proclaiming to, is still something I am yet to wrap my head around.
.
But Kate was not having it.
.
“Don’t tell me that, Moshood. This couldn’t have been exactly how everything played out na. Who do you think you’re talking to? A child? Are you sure you didn’t go all out being brainy on my old man, forgetting that you were there as Moshood the impersonator and not Moshood Avidiime?” Kate asked, with a demeanor that’d made me translate her question to being rhetorical. “How could my father have said all that you just claimed he had, if you hadn’t initiated an avenue to make him so comfortable talking to you? I’ve known that man all my life and can tell you for a fact that he couldn’t have told you that story about my childhood, just for the love of running his mouth. And I know you. When anyone get to know you, Moshood, liking you comes easy. Which was why I kept on hammering on the need to stay on character…”

“…but I did, Kate. I stayed on charact…”

“…obviously not. If you did, I’ll be in my parent’s room right now receiving lectures about why I need to take my time to reevaluate things with you. Moshood, you just pushed me deeper into this mess…”
.
I went closer to Kate, then pulled her in, for a hug.
.
One would have expected that this would somehow calm Kate down but it didn’t.

Kate wouldn’t have it.

Kate couldn’t stand me.

Kate screamed at me, asking me out of the room else, she’ll excused herself.
.
I understood why Kate was reacting in this manner.
.
Nothing about today had gone as planned, so her lividness was justified.
.
I walked out of the room with my head, held down.
.
I bumped into Patience in the hallway, causing the basket of towels she had in hand to come crashing to the floor.

Patience was as startled to see me as much as I was, to see her.
.
“I’m very sorry Sir. I didn’t mean to run into yo…”

“…common! It’s not entirely your fault. I should have been more careful.” I said, as I bent down to help get Patience’s basket up.

“Its fine Sir, I can get it myself.”

“I know, but I’d like to help.” I said, with a smile, as I got a hold of a towel and began to fold.

“Thank you very much Sir.” Patience said, with a blush.
.
I asked to know what Patience was still doing up at that time of the night. She told me that she was just rounding up with her chores and only needed to return these towels to the other empty rooms, before she called it a night.
.
Patience asked to know what I was doing too. She said that she’d overheard when I bid the boys goodnight earlier and was expecting that I should be long asleep by now, in preparation for our long trip back, in the morning.
.
“I know right? I just can’t sleep. I sometimes feel this way the night before a long road trip because of my phobia for them.”
.
Patience broke a very beautiful smile. She apologized that I actually felt that way.
.
Patience and I stayed up a little longer, talking about a lot of things.
.
Patience was as “bright” as I’d imagined.
.
I found out that we had a lot of things in common, one of which was that Patience also loves to write but presently does more reading than writing.
.
We got to know ourselves more and before long, Patience was comfortable enough talking to me about a lot of “personal stuffs”.
.
I’d just said something that got patience laughing.

Patience’s laughter was so cute, it was contagious.
.
We’d both been laughing so hard that we didn’t hear those footsteps crept up on us.

To be continued…
