[STORY] IMPERSONATION (Episode 07)
Episode 07.
“…Moshood! What do you want from my daughter? I’m not going to ask you again.” Mr. John warned, in a tone the calmest I’ve ever been cautioned.
.
The awkward smiles still very much splattered all over his face.
.
Kate warned me o.
Kate warned me that her parents can be very pushy.
As a matter of fact, Kate had told me that her mother only fronts being difficult because usually, she likes to talk a lot but the meaner person in the family was her father.
.
“My daddy doesn’t talk much in terms of things you might consider displeasing to the ears but when he does, you won’t like yourself after an encounter. And It does not matter how long you’ve known the man, there is never getting used to that side of him.” Kate had informed me in our build up to this moment.
.
“I hope to get married someday Sir…”
“…get married? To who, Moshood?” Mr. John asked, this time with a face devoid of smiles.
“T…to your daugh…to Kate Sir.”
.
His face cracked for a smile.
.
“Oh wow. That’s lovely, Moshood.” Mr. John said, his smile getting broader. “I see the shyness now. Kate was right. You couldn’t even find the words to express your undying love and utmost desire for my daughter. That’s cute.”
.
I nodded my head in agreement.
.
Mr. John did most of the talking during our remaining time at that club house.
I’ll simply feign a smile and just nod to whatever he was saying.
.
I wondered what Kate had meant when she said that her mother was the only one in the family that talked “too much”.
Mr. John was not doing badly himself.
Mr. John went on and on talking, giving me stories about Kate and the family. Stories I’d mostly already heard (from Kate) and others I was hearing for the first time.
He’d even gone ahead to give me this very interesting story about Kate. A day in their lives that they’d thought their daughter, “possessed”.
.
“Kate had always grown up to like specific things. This was not unusual for children her age but with Kate, her obsession for guys was alarming…”
“…obsession for guys?” I asked, unsure what exactly Mr. John had meant by that.
“Yes, for guys…” Mr. John said. He paused for a second, as though processing something in his head, then exclaimed. “Oh common now! Get your head out of the gutters, Moshood. It’s not in the manner you’re probably thinking.” Mr. John said, waving me off and shaking his head in realization of how far he’d presumed my mind had strayed.
.
“Kate would always love to be dressed up like a boy and when she was old enough to dress herself, she’ll always wear her brother’s clothes and cry if anyone dares to stop her. All the dresses her mother bought for her, she hardly wore. Then one day, in the middle of a movie, Kate uttered those words…”
“…what words Sir?” I muttered.
“…Kate told my wife that she could never imagine herself being married to a man. I don’t see me getting married to a man was her exact words…”
.
If I was surprised to have heard this, I made sure not to show it.
I sat down on that table with a straight face, nodding or shaking my head where and when I was required to.
.
“My wife rebuked Kate immediately. She told her that she shall indeed, get married to a very handsome man. A man who loves God. A man who will love her the way Christ loves the church. A man that will love her the way her father loves her mum. A man that will be her spiritual guide…”
“… and how did Kate react to those proclamations, Sir?” I managed to ask, curiously.
“…I learned that none of those words seemed to register in Kate. Over the years, we’ve been keeping a close eyes on her. The fact that it took a while before she finally brought someone home heightened our suspicion. Do you know that you are the first man I am meeting? I don’t know if my wife have met any other man Kate had been involved with in the past but Moshood, do you know I sometimes wonder if my daughter is gay?”
.
Mr. John let out what I thought was a smirk for a split second, before he continued…
.
“…Hmmn, its better late than never they say, right? Well I’m glad you are here now. I am glad my daughter found a life partner in you. I like you already, Moshood. I can’t explain it, but something about you is unique. You are also as lucky to find my daughter, as she is to find you”. Mr. John said, now with a grin.
.
I felt like Mr. John was talking too much. Most of the things he’d let me in on about his family; business; about Kate, are things I didn’t really think necessary.
.
Mr. John dished out a lot of advices too.
.
“Finding a life partner and getting married to him or her is the easy part, Moshood. Staying married is the real deal. The secret to staying married is patience. You’ll need a lot of it. Then your willingness to compromise. Understanding that it doesn’t always have to be the way you want it. And your determination to make it work. This determination to make it work, ensures that you never give up even in the roughest of times…”
.
I just sat there nodding my head, my facial expression depicting keen interest in what Mr. John was saying but in real sense, I was wondering where all these was coming from.
“Shey na for wedding day dem suppose dey advice person like this?”
.
Mr John went on and on talking for the next hour or so, before it was finally time for us to head home.
.
On our way back home, I was overly quite.
Mr. John noticed and tried to get me talking.
I tried to but Mr. John is a smart man, I’m sure he noticed that all was not well with me even after I assured him that I was fine.
.
Kate ran into my waiting arms immediately after I alighted from the car.
“Welcome baby!” Kate exclaimed, as her body pressed into mine. She followed this up with a kiss. “Daddy welcome”. Kate threw at Mr. John before returning her attention to me, without even waiting for a response from her father.
.
All through dinner, Mr. John couldn’t stop talking about what an amazing person he thinks I am.
.
“I think Moshood will make a great husband for our daughter”. Mr. John said to his wife amidst a random discussion, to the hearing of everyone at that table.
.
Kate retired to bed early.
.
Kate’s brothers and I had been too wrapped up in “guys’ talk, we’d lost track of time.
.
I finally bid the boys “goodnight” at about 11:32 PM, then made my way upstairs, to our room only to walk in on a very furious Kate.
To be continued… . . .
