[STORY] IMPERSONATION (Episode 05)
Episode 05.
“Good morning my darling. How was your night?” Kate’s mother threw at me, as she made her way into the bedroom, maneuvering past Patience and I by the door, obviously not needing an invitation.
She walked right up to Kate and began to drag the duvet off of her.
“Wake up! Wake up! Sleepy head. It’s almost noon”.
.
Kate woke up, yawning and stretching.
The brightness of the entire room must have blinded her momentarily too.
.
“Good morning mummy”. Kate muttered, sleepily.
“How was your night my love?” Kate’s mother asked, and without waiting for a response, she continued…“Get up! Get up Joor! I have something to show you.”
.
Kate’s mother dragged Kate out of bed and they were soon out of the room.
On their way out, Kate paused at the door where Patience and I had been standing all along watching the drama that’d been playing out in front of us, leaned towards me and planted me a kiss saying, “good morning baby”.
.
I had to play along. I swear I had to, even though I found this aspect, particularly disgusting.
Kate never brush fa, and besides, “IT’S KATE”.
.
Kate’s mom dragged Kate by her hands out of sight, afterwards, making gestures like “Hmm! Una no go kill person with love”, on their way out.
.
All this while, Patience was still standing beside the door.
I’d only even realized this, after Kate and her mother were long gone.
.
I turned towards Patience to ask if she’d come over to tell me something. She said that she’d only come over to announce to us that breakfast was ready. She said that she wanted to verify which of the dining tables we’d prefer our food served.
.
“Oh, okay. Thank you very much, my dear. I think I’ll prefer it served here, upstairs”. I said, as I made my way back inside the room.
.
I didn’t want to stare any more suspicion, hence, not wanting to spend another minute talking to Patience.
But I stopped midway into turning around, just to compliment Patience.
“And you look amazing this morning”. I said, without waiting for the blush I very well knew, followed.
.
It was not until later that afternoon that I had the opportunity to sit from across Kate’s father again.
He’d sent one of Kate’s siblings to come and get me.
.
Kate and her mother had been been busy doing what I had no knowledge of.
Shortly after breakfast, she (Kate’s mother) had come back around, to drag Kate away.
.
As soon as Isaac (Kate’s brother) told me that their father was requesting my presence, I got into something casual and hopped down the staircase, to meet him.
.
Kate’s dad was casually dressed too. He was dressed in a polo and jean knickers.
He had a white sneakers on.
Mr. John looked sharp and ready to step out of the house.
I didn’t know where to.
.
“Moshood, oya let’s go.” Mr. John threw it at me.
“Let’s go ke? Let’s go where?” I thought to myself.
“You’re ready, aren’t you?” Mr. John asked.
.
I didn’t know what my response ought to be in that split second. I just found myself nodding in response to his question.
(Besides, I guess that is exactly what a real prospective son in-law would have done.)
.
Kate’s father handed me the key to his SUV. He said he was going to be my guide to where we were heading.
.
Kate’s father soon had me pulling up in front of a beautiful gate.
It was a club house.
The gate was thrown open and I was directed towards a spot where Kate’s father’s name was boldly inscribed on a sign post, signifying that the spot was his and no one else was allowed to park there.
.
We were soon sitting down opposite each other and a waiter, waiting to take our orders.
.
“No sir! I don’t do alcohol”. I said, when Kate’s father placed an order for one of their fine wines to be brought to me.
“Oh! You don’t? You don’t want to take alcohol right now because you’d like to stay sober all through this discussion with your soon to be father-in-law or you don’t do alcohol at all?” Mr. John asked, rather curiously.
.
I giggled, then proceeded to tell Mr. John that I actually don’t do alcohol at all.
(Besides, no be only “soon to be be father inlaw?”)
.
“I never have and I don’t see me ever indulging Sir”.
(I couldn’t tell him that my religion had primarily prohibited it though because as far as they were concerned, I am an active Dunamite).
“That’s impressive, Moshood. Go ahead and make your choice from their menu then. I’m sure you’ll find something you like in there”.
.
I reached for the menu and at first glance, it was evident that a place like this was not established primarily for “people” like me.
The only non-alcoholic drink I could find in there was water.
Just water.
This was disappointing.
“How can I come to this kind of place and the only thing I am eligible for, is water?”
.
I didn’t have a choice. If I was going to keep my throat moist for the conversation I already knew was coming, I knew that I needed to drink something and water was my only option.
I ordered water and Mr. John ordered for “his favorite”.
The waiter soon reappeared with a tray and our orders on it.
A bottle of water for me and vodka for Mr. John.
.
So, tell me about you, Son. Where are you from? What do you do? And most importantly, what exactly do you want from my daughter?”
