[STORY] BEHIND CHURCH DOORS (Episode 39)

Episode 39.

MISSY
I have just climbed into bed when my phone vibrates, indicating that I have a text message, it’s from my husband and it says “Skype.”
Smiling, I turn on my laptop and switch on the Skype connection. A flickering image of Brett’s face comes into view.
‘Hi, Babe,’ I excitedly scream, ‘How are you? What time is it over there?”

He laughs, “I am fine, how are you? It’s 3:00 am over here.”
The image becomes sharper and I can see that he is in his favorite blue pajamas.
“Why are you up at this time?”
“I woke up to study and decided to talk to you first before you sleep. I have a big test coming up.”
“Alright. I miss you so much.”

“And I miss you too. I will be home in a couple of months.”
I roll my eyes, “Not funny at all.”
“So how did it go! Did he give you the job?”
“He did, I start tomorrow.”
“Oh great, you should be careful.”
“I will. Guess what?”
“What?”
“He prayed for me and even prophesied.”
He laughs,” what did he say?”
“He said I should leave the man in my life because he isn’t the one for me. This man is toxic and God told him that someone better is coming. Can you imagine, ati I have been in a relationship with this man and he hasn’t shown signs of commitment.”
Brett bursts into a fit of laughter, “aside from being a Bishop that man is also a comedian?”
“You don’t know how hard it was for me to keep a straight face when he said that. I almost laughed and called him out.”
“Be careful babe.”
“I will. And then I met this lady, the administrative officer, she gave me some sort of look and attitude. I think there’s more to her than meets the eye. She will be the first person I will be on.”
“Alright you keep me updated. I need to start studying now.”
“Okay babe. I love you, study hard.”
“Thank you. I love you too, have a great night. I will check in on you later.”
“Okay Hun.”
The connection cuts and I place my laptop back on the bedside table before I grab a copy of “Confess” By Colleen Hover. I slide under the covers, open the book and get lost into it. I must have fallen asleep while reading because when I open my eyes it’s morning and the book is open near my outstretched hand.

I grab my phone- It’s 05:00, I have a few hours to get some real work done before I head to my new job. Reluctantly getting to my feet, I wrap my robe around myself and pad into the kitchen to fix myself a cup of coffee.

A couple of minutes later I am back in my room. I sit at my table, grab my laptop and turn it on before I start typing while sipping on my coffee.

I am so engrossed in my work that I lose track of time, when I finally get up to start getting ready for work it’s almost 7:30, “oh shit who gets late on their first day,” I mumble as I rush into the bathroom.

I take a quick bath, get dressed and rush out of the house. On my way to the office, I pass through the cafeteria and grab the Bishop some breakfast. This is like a bribe for getting there late,I don’t want to be fired before I even get started- I get him some black coffee and a hamburger.

When I finally pull up in front of the church, it’s 8:40, I grab the food and my bag, step out of the car and head towards the entrance.
“Good morning. Tia right?” I greet her.
She frowns and eyes me from head to toe before she coldly says” good morning.”
“Bishop is in already?” I ask.
“If you came here on time you would not be asking me that question.”
“Oh!”
I smile before I walk past her desk.
At the door, I knock.
“Come in,” he says and I do just that.
“Missy!”
“Good morning Daddy!”
“Good morning, how are you?”
“I am fine thank you, you?”
“I am okay. I brought you breakfast,” I say, placing the food in front of him.
“Thank you so much.”
“I am sorry for being late. I had an issue with my car.”

“It’s okay. So Tia will give you the contract and employment code conduct. She will run you around my schedule for the week too. I will be leaving the office soon, some pastor’s and I will be visiting the hospital to pray for sick people and make some donations.”
“Okay. Do I need to go with you?”
“No, we are going with the church media team so they will be able to document everything. Just use the day to get familiar with the place and your work. And since it’s your first day you can knock off at lunch.”
“Oh thank you.”.
“You are welcome.”
I place my bag on the other table and walk out of the office.
“So daddy K says you should give me…”
“I know,” she cuts me off short.
“Are you okay?”
“What do you think?”
“Sorry.”
“First things first, reporting time is 08:00, Kingsley is time conscious and doesn’t like late comers.”
“Kingsely?”
She ignores me, “the next time you come late, there will be trouble.”
“You know you are not my boss right?”
She smiles, “don’t feel special because you are working inside that office. I run the show around this place and if you misbehave I will get you kicked out.”
“Is that a threat?”
“I don’t do threats.”
“And bringing Bishop breakfast is not your responsibility. Make it the last time you do that.”
“He didn’t complain so what is it with you?”
“Stay in your lane darling.”
“Whatever. Can I get the contract and employment code of conduct? I also need a schedule of his weekly activities.”

She shoots me an irritated look before she starts typing something on her computer.
“Give me a few minutes,” she says.
“Okay.”
So I sit across from her and watch her type, there is silence for a moment before I decide to try and start up a conversation.
“You are married?” I ask.
She looks up, “how is that any of your business?”
“You are right it’s none of my business.”
“Thank you.”
“Are you always this rude to new people? I thought this is a church and people found here should be kind.”
“Well you thought wrong Missy.”
She focuses her eyes on the computer and after some time she hands me a flash.
“You can print out Bishop’s schedule of activities from the printer over there. I will get the stuff ready for you.”
“Thank you.”
Standing up, she looks at me before she heads towards the Bishop’s office.
