Russia is preparing for a decisive energy attack on all Europeans this winter – Zelensky warns
Russia wants to destroy the normal life of every European, Zelensky says.
Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky has warned Russia is planning to land a decisive blow to the European energy supply this winter.
The war in Ukraine has had a drastic impact on energy supply to large parts of the continent.
Alongside factors like high demand and the pandemic, the brutal conflict has led to the price of energy and petrol soaring for consumers across the UK.
In a recent video address, Mr Zelensky cautioned: ‘Russia is preparing for a decisive energy attack on all Europeans this winter.
‘And the key responses to this should be two things. First, our unity, unity in defending ourselves against the terrorist state. And second, increasing the pressure we put on Russia.
‘This includes increasing sanctions at all levels, and limiting Russia’s oil and gas revenues.
‘The more blows we all inflict together, the fewer blows these terrorists will be able to inflict [on us].’
Gazprom, the Russian state-owned energy corporation, halted the flow of gas via the Nord Stream pipeline on September 2, allegedly due to a malfunction detected from a gas leak at a compressor station near St Petersburg.
The European Commission hit out after, saying this is ‘another confirmation of [Russia’s] unreliability as a supplier’ and ‘proof of Russia’s cynicism’.
Siemens Energy, the German energy company, confirmed a gas leak was not a sufficient technical ground for the halting of Nord Stream gas flow.
Zelenskyy said Russia is ‘trying to increase energy pressure on Europe even more’.
He asked: ‘Why are they doing this? Russia wants to destroy the normal life of every European – in all countries on our continent.
‘It wants to weaken and intimidate the entire Europe, every state.
‘Wherever Russia cannot do it by force of conventional weapons, it does so by force of energy weapons. It is trying to use poverty and political chaos where it cannot yet use missiles.’
It comes as families across the UK struggle with the cost of living crisis, with millions across the country warned of blackouts this winter and rationing of energy supplies.
Four days of residential power cuts are included in a government plan to cope with a worst-case scenario energy and gas supply problem.
