Jamie Carragher describes Jurgen Klopp’s reaction to Darwin Nunez’s red card as a “Nightmare.”

Jamie Carragher fears Jurgen Klopp faces ‘a nightmare’ situation with Darwin Nunez after the Liverpool striker marked his home debut with a red card.

The Uruguay international had enjoyed a dream start to his Reds career following his club-record move from Benfica earlier this summer.

Nunez scored his first goal during the recent Community Shield win over Manchester City and produced an eye-catching performance from the bench last weekend as he helped Liverpool salvage a draw against newly promoted Fulham.

The 23-year-old was rewarded with a first start against Crystal Palace last night in the absence of Robrto Firmino, but his evening was ended when he was sent off in the 57th minute for aiming a headbutt at Joachim Andersen.

Nunez will now miss the next three games through suspension, including next Monday’s heavyweight showdown against Manchester United at Old Trafford, and Carragher believes it could be another six weeks before Klopp can begin to fully reintegrate the Kop’s new cult hero.

He told Sky Sports: ‘What can he say? He can’t go in all guns blazing. He can be frustrated and he’ll speak to the lad. But Darwin Nunez will know more than anyone that he’s made a huge mistake.

‘There’s no debate, everyone knows that. No Liverpool supporter can be having a go at Anderson, I know they were booing him in the stadium but that’s just what happens now that’s what supporters do. He’ll speak to him he mentioned he’ll support him almost like another pre-season.

‘He’s not going to be there, I’m not sure how the games fall or if there’s a cup game in between but he’ll try to work with him without games.

‘A lot of the time you can’t train properly because there are so many games but work with him, get him up but it’s a nightmare. It’s an absolute nightmare start for him, it’s a nightmare start for Klopp because when he comes back it’s almost starting again to integrate him into that team.

‘It’s not tonight, Liverpool could still maybe have won tonight the problem is now how long it’s going to be until he’s back now in the team and you think he’ll probably only be on the bench after those games as well.

‘It could be really five or six weeks before you see him back in the Liverpool XI.’

Fellow pundit Gary Neville argued nobody would have felt worse than Nunez after he let his side, who overcame their numerical disadvantage to secure a creditable point, down but believes opposition players will look to target the striker once he returns to the fold.

‘I think centre-back will try and provoke him now and push him and provoke him that’s what I’d do if I was playing against him the next few weeks,’ he said.

‘I think Jurgen Klopp will have a stern with him either tomorrow or the day after but the player it hurts most is yourself that is the loneliest place in the world.

‘It’s horrible you’re in that dressing room while they’re out on the pitch, you feel you’ve let them down. You don’t need to say too much because it’s awful for them.’
