England team’s fashion statement ahead World Cup
England opt for the smart casual look as they prepare to fly out to Qatar today in a plane that carries a special message.
Gareth Southgate and his players got in the World Cup spirit as they met up at St George’s Park yesterday before heading out to the Middle East.
And it was also revealed the team will be flying on a plane called ‘Rain Bow’ – the symbol of LGBT+ pride – to a country where homosexuality is illegal.
England’s Harry Kane will be wearing the OneLove armband at the World Cup, along with other national team captains.
A Football Association spokesperson said: ‘We show our support for inclusion in many ways, including wearing the OneLove armband during the tournament.’
It is understood the FA did not choose the plane but is happy to fly on it. The chartered flight is with carrier Virgin Atlantic, who have no commercial relationship with the FA.
England’s squad numbers have been announced, with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford No.1, new call-up James Maddison 25 and Jack Grealish seven. Skipper Kane is No.9.
Their first game against Iran takes place next Monday.
