Bernardo Silva’s influence a game-changer for Jack Grealish
England winger Jack Grealish insists he is a top player and revealed Manchester City team-mate Bernardo Silva has changed the way he views football.
Grealish, who has made all three of his appearances at the World Cup off the bench, joined City in August 2021 for £100million – a fee which has appeared to be a millstone around his neck at times.
But, asked whether he was an elite player, he replied, ‘Yes, of course,’ while admitting his record of one Premier League assist this calendar year is ‘crazy’ but that Portugal midfielder Silva has helped his game immensely.
‘One of the best players I’ve played with – and he’s changed the way I see football – is Bernardo Silva,’ said the playmaker, who stated he is ‘living his dream’.
‘Out of everyone I’ve played with he is probably the best. He doesn’t get a proper lot of goals and assists – he has got a few this season from passing it to someone and he is putting it in the top bin.
‘I’m not saying he is the most important player in our team but the way his brain works, he is definitely one of them. I remember one game last season, the manager told Bernardo to come get the ball off (City goalkeeper) Ederson. So Ederson puts the ball down, gives it to Bernardo who goes off on his little dribble around.
‘I was like, “What does this c*** think he is doing, he thinks it’s school football”. It was unbelievable. But he is unbelievable.’
Grealish, 27, wants to be in Gareth Southgate’s starting XI but realises he is likely to be given a cameo role again when England face Senegal on Sunday at Al Bayt Stadium, something he got used to at Euro 2020. All remaining squad members trained yesterday at Al Wakrah in the wake of Ben White’s return home for personal reasons.
‘I would love to start games. I’m not sitting here saying I don’t want to start,’ he added.
‘I’d love to come on as a sub, and I’d love to play obviously, but I do appreciate the other talents we have in the squad,’ Grealish added.
‘I’ve had to get my head around it, I’ve done that at the Euros a fair bit and obviously I have done it here, but whenever I’m called upon by the manager, whether that be starting or on the bench, I am ready to come on and try and change a game.’
