[STORY] BEHIND CHURCH DOORS (Episode 47)

Episode 47.

SOPHIA
“You know you don’t have to do this,” says Ryan. We have been parked in front of my father’s gate for a couple of minutes and I haven’t gathered the strength to step out of the car yet. There was so much running through my mind that I feel a little overwhelmed by all of it. These people are still my parents no matter how cruel they are and this is something I will have to deal with for the rest of my life.

“I think i am ready.”
“You sure?”
“I will be waiting for you.”
“Okay.”

I get out of the car and with wobbly legs, I enter the house and head straight into the living room where my whole family is gathered. When Bishop K spots me he says, “look what the cat dragged in. If it isn’t the prodigal daughter.”
Trying to match his sarcasm I respond, “And see who decided to talk to me. If it isn’t my father- Bishop rapist.”

A collective gasp fills the room, heads swivel and all eyes turn to me.
“Sophia?” My mother says.
“What?”
“Is that a way to speak to your father?”
“Does this rapist and murder even have the right to be called a father?”
“Shut up! I said shut up!” My sister Leah yells. “Why would you disrespect our father like that? What sort of child are you?”

“I have always known that this child is demon possessed,” Bishop K says, “it’s not her speaking she is being used by the devil.”
I smile, “An apple doesn’t fall far from its tree father. If I am demon possessed then so are you.”
“Enough! I have had enough of your insults,” he rises to his feet, steps up in front of me and slaps me on the face. “Don’t you dare speak to me like that or else..”
“Or else what?” I spit.

He raises his hand to slap me again but mum holds it back,” Bashi Leah now is not the time please,” she pleads.
“You look at the devil that you gave birth to. This little mistake that you brought into the world is standing up to me and throwing insults at me? Did you ever tell her she was unplanned? Does she know that after Leah we were done and this one just slipped in accidentally?” He yells.
“Bashi Leah please!”
“I am not even here to argue with you. I just came to tell you that I will be one of the witnesses in court, I am testifying against you.”
“What? Sophia?”
“Leah, don’t start and you too Dorcus just shut it,” I yell at my sisters. Then I stare at my mother,”How could you allow him to treat you like garbage? What sort of example are you setting up for us? Why have you been cleaning up his mess? This man doesn’t even love and respect you. The only time he spends time around you is when he needs you to do something for him.”
“Shut up,” Bishop K warns.
“Kondwani, you thought we wouldn’t know about him? And Matildah that young girl you molested, got pregnant and forced her to get an abortion but she died in the process.”
“Who is Kondwani?” Leah asks.
“She needs to leave,” He insists. My mother is still holding him and tears are running down her face.
“Kondwani is our young brother. Dad has a child out of wedlock, mum knows about it too apparently they have been keeping that as a secret.”
“You can’t believe everything on social media Sophia. You should know that people want to destroy dad and his ministry.”
“No one wants to destroy him. Did these two tell you I was pregnant?”
My sister’s stare at me in shock.
“You have been galavanting around the world trying to teach Bishop K’s version of the gospel such that you have lost sight of what’s important.”
“I was pregnant by Pastor G. He laced my food with abortion pills and I lost my baby, I wanted to get him arrested but these two destroyed the evidence and asked me to forgive him, that ordeal scarred me. I brought Missy into your lives, I wanted her to gather evidence against Pastor G but what she found about you is worse than what that man has done so here we are.”
“You did what?”
“You heard me right. I set you up.”
“I will kill you,” he tries to come at me but mum holds him,” Now is not the time please,” she keeps saying over and over again.”
“I am done here. I don’t want anything to do with you all. Let’s meet in court.”
“Sophia!”

I don’t even turn around, I head straight for the head, “What was she talking about Mum?” I hear Leah asking as I head out.
Slamming the door behind my back I walk to the car and get in, “drive,” I say.
He starts the car and drives me to school without saying a word to me. I appreciate that he can read my mind, I don’t want to talk about it at least not yet.

MISSY

“What is she coming to do here?” Manny asks, I just got off the phone with Tia and she asked if we could meet. I have been waiting for this call, I am even surprised it didn’t come earlier.
I shrug,” I don’t know.”
“Yet you gave her your address?”
“Tia is harmless.”
“You can’t trust these papa followers. They can do just about anything to support their spiritual father’s, you need to be careful.”
“I am careful.”
“Okay.”

I continue editing the documentary until a knock sounds at the door, Manny looks at me before he stands up and heads to open it.
I save my work and quickly shut the laptop.
“Hello,” I say when Tia walks in.
“Hi.”
“Can I get you anything to drink?”
“I am fine.”
“You wanted to see me.”
“Yes,” she clears her throat. “I want you to drop the charges against Bishop K and accept the money they are offering you.”
“Why?”
“Can’t you see what you are doing to his family and ministry? He worked so hard to be where he is, you can’t destroy that just because he tried to touch you.”
I laugh, “Do you finally know who the father of that child is?” I ask and she stares at me for a moment before she says, “what sort of stupid question is that, don’t you know I am married.”
“And yet you have been fucking Bishop K?”
“Is this what this is about? You are jealous?”
“If you haven’t noticed I am married and I love my husband so much, unlike you I respect my vows.”
“Drop the case.”
“I am not doing that. Bishop K is going down, you are going down too because I won’t spare you. I feel.sorry for your husband but this has to be done.”
“You are ungrateful and leave my husband out of your drama.”
“If you testify against the Bishop I can find a way to keep this information about you to….”
“Never, I will not testify.”
“Then we are done here.”
“You have played with fire long enough. It’s time for you to get burnt.”
She stands up, “you will lose this case I will make sure of that.”
“Oh I am scared,” I laugh.
“I made a mistake coming here,” she grabs her back and turns.
“Close the door on your way out.”
She clicks her tongue and exits the house leaving the door open.
“Blind follower,” Manny says before we both burst into a fit of laughter.
