Warning to Android users over new threat affecting millions of devices
Millions of Android smartphones have been impacted by a harmful bug that has been reported to users.
The Necro bug can steal personal information and force users to pay up for expensive subscriptions without their knowledge. It entered Android devices through certain applications.
Necro was initially discovered in 2019 by the cyber security company Kapersky, which also claims that the virus is typically spread via programs referred to as mods.
Mods are altered versions of legitimate programs, like Spotify and WhatsApp, that make claims to have more functioMirroMost are unofficial, not on Google Play and tend to be offered at a cheaper price than their counterparts or for free, reports The Mirror.
However, a few apps on Google Play have also been infiltrated.
According to Kapersky, among them is a photo editing app called Wuta Camera, which was downloaded 10 million times before Necro was discovered and removed.
How to keep your Android safe from Necro
Kaspersky offers a few tips on how you can stay safe from Necro.
Firstly the company strongly advises against downloading apps from unofficial sources, as these apps are often much easier to infiltrate with bugs.
Although you can download apps from official platforms such as Google Play, it’s best to approach each app with caution.
Check the app’s page in the store first and look to see it has reviews with low rating, as these can offer warnings about possible issues.
Also when an app has lots of rave reviews and an overall high score be wary as it could be fake.
Finally, avoid using modified apps or hacked versions as they could have been infiltrated.
