Twitter resumed hiring after Elon Musk declared the end of layoffs

After cutting Twitter’s 7,500-strong workforce to about 2,700, Elon Musk has confirmed that there will be no more layoffs.

Musk announced that the company was done with layoffs and was actively recruiting for roles in engineering and sales in an all-hands meeting with Twitter employees on Monday.

Employees were encouraged to make referrals, according to two people who attended and a partial recording obtained by The Verge.

The announcement came after a number of staff in Twitter’s sales department were fired on the same day, including Robin Wheeler, Twitter’s global head of advertising sales.

Musk also reportedly told the team that he had no intention of moving the company’s headquarters from San Francisco to Texas where his car company Tesla is headquartered.

This is the first time since Musk’s takeover of the company in October, the threat of layoffs has been put to rest.

The meeting came after most employees worked through the weekend for Musk, who posted to Twitter pictures of an early Saturday morning ‘code review’.

It’s estimated that nearly 50% of Twitter’s engineering team is missing and Musk will need to hire new talent to keep the site up and running.

On Friday, the billionaire urgently requested ‘anyone’ left at Twitter who could write software to meet with him.

Last week, Musk’s email to Twitter staff asking them to sign a pledge committing to a new ‘hardcore’ work ethic caused a mass resignation.
