Episode 02.

Kate’s parents could not believe their ears when Kate finally told them that she has a man in her life who might be considering coming over to see them.
.
Kate’s mother particularly almost drove Kate mad with questions about this “supposed” boyfriend.

“Where is he from? What does he do for a living? Is he “born again?” What church does he worship with…?”
.
When Kate approached me with the proposal to pose as her fiancé to her family, she was more than certain I was going to turn her down.

But she was wrong.

It was one of the easiest “Yes” I’ve ever had to say.
.
I thought, I’ll get to play as the lead character in a story line I’ve always wanted to be the standard for.
.
I’ve always imagined what it’ll be like to “live” what I’ve always watched in the movies.

But unlike the predictability in movies with these story lines, I highly doubt my situation with Kate could ever be of the same “famous” ending.
.
Kate is an amazing human being with an amazing personality. I like her a lot, but I’ve never considered her in “that” manner.
.
Kate is nothing close to what my ideal woman looks like.

Now that I even think about it, I never see “us” happening.
.
I’ve only agreed to do this, because I’ll be killing two birds with one stone.

I’ll be helping out a very good friend while at the same time, living a dream.
.
The week before we finally traveled down to Kate’s home town to see her parents, Kate and I went over possible questions her parents (her mother especially) would most likely ask me.

I needed to get everything right.

None of my responses must contradict anything Kate had told them.
.
The one time I tried to be in control of this conversation, telling Kate not to worry, that I could always find my way with words in a situation whereby I am being asked a question we’ve not rehearsed for, Kate abruptly declined. She said her parents (Her mother especially) would be looking out for these tiny inconsistencies because even though they are very excited to meet me, they still have their doubts.
.
“Doubts ke! I don’t understand. They don’t believe you can find yourself a man or what?” I asked.

Kate heaved a deep sigh, nodded her head, reached for her handbag and began to fumble with it.

I moved closer to Kate, I reached over to take her hands in mine.

Kate’s demeanor had suddenly flipped. She’d become sad, her hands were shaking, and she was now almost tearing up.
.
I was certainly lost.

I had not even the slightest of ideas what was going on.
.
“Is it something I’ve said? I’m sorry Kate, if it was. I didn’t mean to pry”. I said, unsure what exactly I’d said that this could have been as a result of.

But I thought the need to apologize, especially if I thought it would make Kate feel any better.
.
Kate shook her head (probably in response to what I’d said) as she tried to put herself together.

Kate tried to say something, but was now drowning in her own tears. So much so, that she couldn’t even find the voice to speak.
.
Now this was more serious than I’d thought.
.
I moved closer to hold Kate in a comforting hug.
.
Kate must have truly needed that hug because she immediately leaned towards me and now began to let out a soft wail.
.
When she was a lot calmer, she went ahead to tell me how much pressure she has been enduring lately, just to get herself a man.

“My mother has been making it seem as though it’s my fault that all my relationships never last. She’d at one point told me that she doubts if I’ll ever be able to keep a home. She had even once said that until the wedding is fixed and she sees me walking down that aisle with a man, she still would not believe that it is actually happening. Despite my personal accomplishments, Moshood, why do these people think that a man ought to be the crown of it all? Why do women have to be judged by this other gender’s insensitivities? I just want these people to get off my back for a minute, is that too much to ask for? This is why I am even stooping to this extent, Moshood. I feel like they will let me rest for a while, after they see you…”
