[STORY] AGE NINETEEN (Episode 02)

Episode 02.

I insisted on having a quiet birthday. I didn’t want anything too loud, because I needed time to think. Obviously, those other girls were my elder sisters, and they all died on their ninteenth birthday.

I visited the orange tree, where the oldest girl was buried. There was nothing to show that someone’s body was laid to rest there. I sat under the tree, observing. I could see birds who made the tree their home. “Sweet Anabel” I called out. “What was the cause of your death ?” I listened, hoping to get an answer. The birds sang, the insects flew about and the butterflies circled the tree. I waited patiently, hoping to get an answer, but none came forth.

I left the tree disappointed. I needed to gather as much facts as possible, and I needed to do that soon. My birthday was in few weeks, and my friends were so excited. I wasn’t, but I tried not to show it. That afternoon, one of my girlfriends took me out. I didn’t want to go, but I didn’t want to create suspicion either. I also needed to clear my head, so reluctantly I followed her.

That evening, my dad returned from his tour. He hugged me so passionately, I knew something was wrong. “Kerah,” he said to me. “I will never hurt you intentionally.” “Why do you say so ?” I asked with tears in my eyes. “I love you” He responded and hurried inside his bedroom, and shut the door. Unknown to him, I saw the tears.

Standing on the dwarf wall, I had a good view of my father’s bedroom. I watched him weep profusely, swearing and cursing. He had a diary opened. He flipped passionately through the pages, kissing each page, before turning to the next. “Sweet kerah” He called out. My heart skipped, I thought he had seen me. “Nineteen is almost here,” He lamented.

I tiptoed into my father’s bedroom and stole the book. The first page read “Because of your misdeeds, no girl who came from your loins will grow pass the age of nineteen. On their nineteenth birthday, they will all die.” I stood transfixed by the orange tree, where I hid to read my father’s diary. I knew I was alone, so I was shocked when a voice called out in the silence, “Kerah I can help you”
