Nintendo Switch 2 will reportedly be easy to emulate

It is anticipated that Nintendo will reveal the Switch 2 around March 2025, and based on previous leaks, it will have superior hardware than the original. However, according to a recent Centro LEAKS story, the same tools and ROM format will be used by the next gaming handheld.

Of course, there will be new encryption keys, but the same ROM format and tools would mean that its games will be as easy to emulate as the first-gen Nintendo Switch. This is likely why the company has taken strict measures to shut down emulators like Yuzu, Suyu, and Ryujinx years after their public release.

After all, if the upcoming gaming handheld actually uses the same ROM format and tools as the current-gen model (curr. $269.99 on Amazon), these emulators would require minimal changes to emulate Switch 2’s games. As a matter of fact, the exclusive titles would be playable on other systems at launch, which could hurt the sales of Nintendo’s new console.

Regarding the other reports about Nintendo Switch 2, a recent leak revolving around Game Freak, the developer behind the Pokemon franchise, has revealed the potential codename of the gaming handheld. Reportedly, its codename will be “Ounce,” a detail previously hinted at in earlier rumors.

Moreover, the gaming handheld’s hardware will reportedly support Unreal Engine 5 features. This could lead to the upcoming console receiving better support from the third-party developer community. The Switch 2 is also expected to get major third-party AAA ports at launch, something that the original console lacked.
