Google shutting down its Street View app on Android and iOS
Google will be scrapping its standalone Street View app from app stores in the ‘coming weeks’.
Evidence of the tech giant’s plans to kill the app was spotted by 9to5Google in a recent update.
They discovered that Google was planning to shut down the app on March 31, 2023, encouraging users to switch to either Google Maps or Street View Studio.
The dedicated Street View app, available on both Android and iOS, allows you to check out places on Google Maps with Street View and contribute 360-degree imagery.
However, most of us just use Google Maps for Street View so it makes sense that Google doesn’t want to spend resources supporting the obsolete app.
Recently, the company announced that it was planning to introduce an ‘Immersive View’ to give you a 3D aerial view of a specific location with details like weather and traffic.
Google’s Street View is an easy way to get a 360° look at almost any given street on the planet.
The Street View app was primarily used by people who liked to contribute their own 360° imagery.
Those people can still use Street View in the main Google Maps app to contribute 360 imagery with the Street View Studio web app.
Street View began in 2007 as an idea to create a 360-degree map of the world. Since then, Google has captured over 220 billion images and more than 10 million miles across 100 countries and territories together.
In 2015, Street View was also available in VR.
