Employees at Twitter to face layoffs and return to office order under Musk
It’s a tense time to be an employee at Twitter where the work culture seems to have shifted overnight following Elon Musk’s takeover.
The Tesla CEO plans to cut about 3,700 jobs at Twitter or half of the company’s workforce in a bid to cut costs, Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter.
Twitter’s new owner will inform the staff affected on Friday, according to the report.
Bloomberg also reported that Musk intends to reverse the social media company’s existing work from anywhere policy and will require employees to work from the office with some exceptions.

Musk, in a tweet, had denied a New York Times report that said he was planning to lay off Twitter employees before 1 November to avoid paying them stock grants due on the day.
Twitter employees whose fate remains uncertain till the proposed layoffs are announced, are putting in longer hours than usual.
Since taking control of Twitter on Thursday, Musk’s first task to employees has been to work on introducing paid verification on the platform. Musk announced on Tuesday, that the platform would be charging $8 a month for a blue checkmark.
On Sunday, employees working on the project were given a tight deadline of 7 November to launch the feature. Failing to do so would likely get them fired.
Employees tasked with Musk’s projects like the paid verification feature have reportedly been working late into the night and over the weekend.
To meet Musk’s deadlines, Twitter managers have reportedly told some staff to work 12-hour shifts, seven days a week. All this with no assurance thay they would get overtime pay, time off in lieu, or job security for working on the assignments.
Managers themselves have been feeling the strain, with some telling The New York Times that they slept at Twitter’s office on the nights following the takeover.
On Monday, Musk dissolved Twitter’s board of directors to become its sole director.
The world’s richest man has already fired Twitter’s CEO, as well as other senior executives, within days of taking ownership.
