Paul Merson sends warning to Chelsea fans over Graham Potter
Arsenal legend Paul Merson has warned Chelsea fans ‘not to get carried away’ with Graham Potter’s start at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea appointed former Brighton boss Potter as Thomas Tuchel’s replacement last month, but the 47-year-old has only overseen three games due to the international break and postponements following the Queen’s death.
The Blues drew 1-1 with Red Bull Salzburg in Potter’s first game in the dugout and have since beaten Crystal Palace away and thumped AC Milan 3-0 in the Champions League.
The signs are certainly promising but Merson was not blown away by their performances against Palace and Milan and says Chelsea supporters ‘shouldn’t get carried away’ as Potter’s side are yet to play ‘anyone of real note’.
Chelsea, who are currently fifth in the Premier League, welcome Wolves to Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
Merson told the Daily Star: ‘I watched Chelsea at Crystal Palace last weekend and I thought the Blues got away with one.
‘The goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga was the man of the match and it could have gone either way.
‘If you came to watch the two sides for the first time, you wouldn’t have known who was Chelsea. There was that little between them.
‘AC Milan was a good result but they were fortunate to put a team out, so we shouldn’t get carried away just yet with Graham Potter.
‘There’s no doubt that he’s had a decent enough start but they haven’t played anyone of real note.
‘If Chelsea get in the top four this season, I think they’ve had the biggest result ever. I don’t mean that disrespectfully but it’s going to take time to implement his ideas from Brighton.
‘Next season I think we will see a completely different Chelsea. They will be a massive threat.’
Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana is currently unavailable following the knee injury he sustained against AC Milan, but Marc Cucurella could feature tomorrow after recovering from illness.
