Why The Most Part Of Being In The Mainstream Is Compromising Your Personal Life
Written by Quasar Miami
My dad told us many stories. I sometimes thought he was related to Faleti. And, one of those stories that stuck is a particular one dubbed “like my own.”
According to the story, a particular young man was Employed as a cook, in some company. So it happened that, the people he cooked for noticed that he usually cut his onions into very big slices, and they complained. He didn’t heed. Until one day, he was in the kitchen with his senior, a chef. When he was about slicing the onions, he jested and teased the oga; “sheybi I should cut it like my own,” asking if he should slice ’em the way he does his thing. That was the end of his job there. He was sacked! Why? He tried to stay true to his stuff, doing it how he knows best, but doing his thing won’t pay him salary. And, he has to do it the way the people he catered for wanted it.
It’s not too different in the industry. For you to get a shot at the mainstream, you have to forget what you want, and put it in mind that you’re not singing for yourself, rather for the general public. Without that in mind, you may end up with the tag “Alternative!”
Sometimes you have to separate the person from the artist – how crazy does this sound? You are a person, but the artist is a brand. That’s why every love song 2face does isn’t a song for Annie. Banky might have done Made For You, with Adesua in mind, but mentioning her name can fuck the jam up. It’s supposed to be for the public. Come to think of it, who is Folake, Diana, Samantha, did Tekno date so many girls ? But, he has to forget who he’s dated or is dating, and get ideas to make more hit songs.

It’s the same thing as shouting “balling in Malay,” when you’re still hustling. Not that it’s true. BUT, you think it’s good shouting you dey hustle, everytime. That’s how to blow? – ask Ola dips.
What if Timaya doesn’t have so much enemies? What if nobody ever said he has joined Illuminati? And, he’s only doing that for music sake. Think ’bout it, Olamide’s so cool, but on every song, he sounds like he kills people for a living (no reference to the baddo cult.) This gives him a dual personality, isn’t it?
Don’t you know Muslim artists who reference Jesus in their songs? The music made them that.
Everyone wants a piece of that pie, up there – even your most hardcore underground rapper does, and so, in one way or the other, to get it, you need to appease to a larger audience, who want you to talk about your African lady, say you have $30b in your account, and not just how your ex broke up wi’ you, and left you lonely. In pop culture, that’s garbage.
A christian boy wakes up one day, adds “Alhaji,” to his name, that’s compromise. A gentle boy starts saying “I’ma murder y’all,” that’s the compromise. A kid who’s never dated crooning “I’ma love you till the end of time,” that’s compromise. A random artist saying Yahoo terms (clients, cc top-up, wellsfargo etc), that’s it. And a hustler crying “owo yapa lapo mi.” And, a celibate person singing ’bout patronizing Olosho. It all boils down to the same thing…
…If I must be in the Mainstream, I can’t do it “like my own.” I may get sacked, or worse.
