Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank
Even at age 96 Mel Brooks is a force of nature and you can assume that any film with which he is associated is going to be a doozy. Jackson, Michael Cera, Gabriel Iglesias, George Takei, Michelle Yeoh, Djimon Hounsou and others.
This computer-animated martial arts comedy film follows the story of Hank, a loveable dog who dreams of becoming a great samurai. He sets off to realize his dreams but finds himself in the unfriendly town of Kakamucho where the residents view him with suspicion – understandably because they’re all cats.
Hank gets mixed up in the dastardly Ika Chu’s plan to rid Kakamucho of its cat inhabitants. Chu needs Hank and is just on the cusp of tricking Hank into teaming up with him when the feisty kitten Emiko and the once-mighty Samurai Jimbo who has fallen from grace teach him how to use samurai skills for the good of all.
Operation Mincemeat
Colin Firth heads a solid cast in this retelling of a true-life narrative of Operation Mincemeat, the successful Allied operation that aimed to deceive the Nazis in order to effect the invasion of Sicily. Using the body of a man who had died, British intelligence dressed the dead man in the uniform of a Royal Marines officer and gave him the identity of Captain (Acting Major) William Martin.
Intelligence placed personal correspondence on his body that indicated that the Allies were planning to invade Sardinia and Greece but would try to trick the Nazis by distracting them with an operation in Sicily. The British, with the support of the Americans, released the body on the southern coast of Spain. It was found by a Spanish fisherman who reported it to local authorities. They, in turn, shared copies of the documents with German military intelligence.
The Germans fell for the ruse and shifted reinforcements to Sardinia and Greece, paving the way for the successful Allied invasion of Sicily. The Operation Mincemeat film mixes fiction with fact to deliver a film that is thrilling, romantic, tense, surprising and even, at times, funny.
