Thibaut Courtois: Giving Barcelona the Title Wouldn’t Be Fair
Leagues across Europe are desperately trying to restart amidst the coronavirus pandemic.
The lingering fear of competitive action being ended for the 2019/20 season is not going away anytime soon, with Ligue 1’s campaign already finishing after intervention from the French government.
Today, it was announced that German chancellor Angela Merkel has green lighted the return of the Bundesliga once a two-week quarantine period for teams has been completed.
Football in the country should be restored on either May 22 or May 29, with teams in the Bundesliga having already returned to training in recent weeks.
However, the situation in Spain is far less clear. There is currently no real concrete plan in place for the revival of competitive action and there are growing concerns that the season will simply come to an end.
Would that mean Barcelona crowned as champions like Paris Saint-Germain? It’s a potential outcome that has not sat well with Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois.
“We are only two points behind Barcelona and if the season were to be cancelled and Barcelona declared champions then it would be unjust,” Courtois said on Belgian TV, per Marca.
“We drew with them and beat them this year, we were the better team. In the case of Liverpool, it would be different because I don’t even know how many points ahead they are. I want to finish the season.”
While you can understand Courtois’ frustration, it must be remembered that Barcelona are still top of the league.
Regardless of results in the two El Clasico games, the Blaugrana have amassed more points than their eternal enemies from the same amount of games.
The rule which saw PSG crowned champions of France can’t simply be altered because Barca have a smaller lead at the top or lost to the team in second place, it just doesn’t work like that.
In an ideal world, the remaining 11 games of the La Liga season would be played out, but the coronavirus pandemic has left the sport in a far from perfect situation.
