Episode 04.

“I’m not sure she is my mom. My real mother can’t be treating me this way. I didn’t do anything wrong, yet, I got beaten this way. What have I done to deserve this?”, Dammy said to herself as she reached out for a pain reliever.

Suddenly, Mrs Ololade entered Dammy’s room.

“Oh no! What again this time?”, She said to herself as she saw her mother.

Mrs Ololade smiled wickedly and said, “I have a good news for you. You don’t have to sit down joblessly staring at the marks on your body. There are a lot of beautiful dirty plates and pots waiting for you in the kitchen. Also, I would like you to sweep the whole compound. I want everything done in the next thirty minutes”.

“Okay ma’am”, Dammy mumbled.

Mrs Ololade moved out of the room and Dammy tried to hold her tears again. “Is this the apology for being beaten”.

“Mr Philps, I’m very mad at you. How could you do that to me, ” Dammy shouted as she barged into Mr Philps’ office.

The confused Mr Philps stared at Dammy in amazement. “Why are you staring at me like that? Are you not the one that made me go through punishment at home. Did I ask you to tell my mom anything? I’m sure you are happy with this,” Dammy said as she showed Mr Philips some stripes on her body.

“You mean your mom did this to you?”

“Not only did she beat me up, I was also asked to wash numerous plates, even those ones not dirty. I was also asked to sweep the whole compound. I wasn’t able to do any of my school assignments,” Dammy said angrily.

She didn’t even know who to blame: Her Mom or Mr Philps.

“Dammy, I didnt mean for any of this to happen. I only wanted to help out, Mr Philips said.

Well you certainly did a great job in helping out?, Dammy said ironically.

Dammy, Im really sorry about what happened. I never knew that it would turn out this way, Mr Philip apologized.

“I’d like to be excused now, Dammy said and walked out.

” Dammy, Dammy, Dammy,” Mr Philps tried to call back. “If I knew Mrs Ololade would react like that, I wouldnt have called her. She could just have called Dammy, sit her down and talk to her about the situation instead of beating her up. Which sort of mother is she? She will end up shutting this girl up for life,” Mr Philps murmured to himself.

Suddenly David walked into Mr Philps office and Mr Philps had to comport himself.

“Good morning sir, I came to submit the assignment notes of my class members,” David said.

“Oh! Class captain! Thank you very much dear. Drop it over there”.

David dropped the notes in his hands and left the office.

The cafeteria was filled with students. Students were seated in groups on each table.

Dammy was the only student on her table. She had a poor relationship with people, so, she didn’t have friends. Her mom words had always rang in her head, “I’m not sending you to school to make friends, concentrate on your studies”. Dammy didn’t grow up with friends around her, so, she didn’t know how to have one even if she wanted to.

She had a simple food in front of her, Jollof rice and chicken with a bottle of soft drink. She had ordered for it earlier on the food counter. She tried to forget her problems as she focused on the food she was eating.

“May I seat with you,” A voice said and disrupted Dammy’s thoughts.
