[STORY] Road to Nowhere (Episode 02)
Episode 02.
“Dammy! Dammy! Dammy!”, The voice of Mrs Ololade echoed into Dammy’s ear.
She rose up from her bed and saw her mom staring at her disdainfully.
“Dammy, do you know what time it is? You are just waking up by seven o’clock when most of your mates who are less privileged are already outside hawking. Is this what I’m wasting my money on? I’m using my money to send you to a very good school, is this how you repay me?
Dammy was not ready for an argument, she couldn’t sleep well the previous night as a result of a throbbing headache.
“Good morning, mom”, Dammy said so as to avoid further abusive words.
Mrs Ololade looked at her in a very bad manner and hissed. After that, she left Dammy’s room.
Dammy was already used to her mom’s behavior, but, that didn’t stop her from crying that morning.
“Is this the way mothers say good morning to their children?” She asked herself as she wiped her tears.
Dammy’s temperament had a great way of getting her emotional even at little things. A little word from her mom could make her cry for hours.
She decided to be strong that very day. She said a little prayer and got up from the bed to prepare for school.
After twenty minutes, she was dressed up in her school uniform and her school bag was on her back. She looked into the mirror and styled her hair. She was looking very beautiful in that mirror and she wished someone could tell her that or complement her.
“Why are you looking so haggard and ugly?” Mrs Ololade said behind her.
“What! I look so haggard and ugly?” Dammy almost screamed out as she heard her mom. She slowly turned to her mom trying to control the tears that had started forming on her face, “I’m ready for school, ma”.
Mrs Ololade hissed and then said, “Should I start weeping then? Anyways, your pocket money is on the dining table. If you like, be attentive in classes and if you like, sleep in classes” . With that, Mrs Ololade left the room.
“I think this is the way mothers say good bye to their children,
“Dammy said to herself as she walked down to her school.
Dammy’s school was just few kilometers to her house. Her mom could actually drive her down to school, but, she didn’t want to pamper her.
To Mrs Ololade, that would make Dammy lazy.
Dammy was the only daughter of her parents, she was just in Senior Secondary School Class 2 (SSS2), her elder brother was in the University already. Mr and Mrs Ololade only had two children.
Mrs Ololade was a business woman. She had a very big super mart where she sold commodities in large quantities. Mr Ololade was an accountant in the bank. He would leave the house very early in the morning before Dammy wakes up and he would return late in the night.
Mrs Ololade loved her daughter and she wanted to be a good mother to her. She had heard of a lot of children whose lives were destroyed because their parents were pampering them. She had tried her best to bring up Dammy in a hard way, so that Dammy would be responsible when she grows up. She brought Dammy up with great hardwork by giving her tedious house chores on a daily basis. Also, she made sure she spanked her daughter for every wrong she did.
Mr Ololade also loved Dammy so much. He made sure she never lacked any material things. He bought whatever Dammy wanted. Thanks to Mr Ololade, Dammy had an apple laptop and a big i-phone at age fifteen. The only problem with Mr Ololade was that he never had time to spend with Dammy. He was always busy at work.
As Dammy walked to school , she wondered who was better between her mom and her dad. She had grown up believing that her mother never loved her. She wondered if she was right or wrong. Suddenly, Dammy heard a noise ahead of her. She stopped walking so that she could hear properly.
“Kidnappers! Kidnappers! Kidnappers!” , The voice shouted.
