[STORY] ARIKE (Episode 01)
Episode 01.
At Mr. and Mrs. Folarin’s house.
Mr. Folarin is seen on a call with his only son Tosin.
Mr. Folarin: Okay just take care of yourself and I hope you’ve been praying?
Tosin: Yes daddy I’m trying my best, you know I’m schooling and sometimes I get tired.
Mr. Folarin: Wow what an excuse, so suddenly school is making you tired to pray right?
His wife walked in and sat beside him excited.
Mrs. Folarin: Is that Tosin?
Mr. Folarin: Yes, your son no more prays because he is studying.
Tosin: Common dad I didn’t say that, you know what I have to drop the call now, I’ll soon be late for lectures.
Mrs. Folarin: It’s okay I’ll be praying for you okay, and be careful alright?
Tosin: You’re the best mommy bye.
The line went dead and Enitan smiled at her husband.
Enitan: Don’t be upset, we trained him well didn’t we? And of course, we can stand in the gap to pray for him.
Mr. Folarin: Don’t be too sure about that, my dreams for the few days have not been too good.
He slowly left the sofa he sat and paced around worried and Enitan stood behind him.
Enitan: You are the last person I know who worries about dreams, did you pray about it?
Mr. Folarin: Of course I did but I’m not satisfied. Something is missing and I can’t figure it out.
Enitan: Is that why you’re worried about Tosin? What does he have to do with your dreams?
He turned and looked at her for a while and nodded.
Mr. Folarin: I’ve seen him twice in danger in my dreams. I didn’t want to tell you so you won’t panic, but then you have to encourage your son to be serious with God for crying out loud. He also has to pray to help himself, he has a part to play because only he can work out his salvation even if we are praying for him.
Enitan gasped and slowly sat down trying to control herself.
Enitan: Nothing will happen to my son, I am very sure about that and there’s nothing serious about your dreams maybe you’re just paranoid.
Mr. Folarin: Paranoid? When have I ever been paranoid for nothing?
A tear dropped from Enitan’s eyes and he heaved and sat down touching her shoulder.
Mr. Folarin: You know I hate to see you display weakness whenever it comes to Tosin, what will your worries do?
Enitan: You are the one worried and it’s scaring me, what do you expect me to do if you’re not at peace with yourself? You alone know the dreams you’ve been having and if you’re having a bad feeling about it, how do you expect me to react?
Mr. Folarin: I never said I am worried… Okay I’m sorry if I got you scared but this isn’t the best way to react trust me, You are to support me in prayers and as well encourage our son to do the same, that’s all I need from you and everything will be fine okay?
He crossed his hands on her and cleaned her tears and she nodded.
Enitan: Sure, Tosin will be safe I know that.
A call came on his phone.
Mr. Folarin: Now you’re talking, sorry let me take this.
Enitan: I’ll go continue in the kitchen.
She left leaving her husband to concentrate on the call.
At Tosin Campus.
His friends came around and sat with him but Tosin didn’t bother looking at their faces.
Tosin: Again you’re late for lectures.
Samuel: No scolding today school teacher, by the way why is the lecturer not yet here?
Tosin: Ask me, maybe I look like his driver.
Johnson: Whatever.
Samuel: He’s here, at least we arrived on time.
Tosin gave a little smile when Samuel playfully hit him as they got set for the class.
Mr. Olusola: Good morning everyone.
Students: Good morning sir.
Mr. Olusola: Yes and I will first apologize for being 20 minutes late. But then I have to send out this important notice, there will be a field trip this week Friday.
Murmurings issued out from the students as he quietly watched them.
Mr. Olusola: Okay if you all are done behaving like mad people, can someone who has a complete and mature brain stand up and tell me what the problem is?
Samuel raised his hand and The lecturer nodded at him.
Samuel: Thank you, sir. Well, we are only complaining about the short notice of the field trip. I think we should have been told on time so we can prepare well for it.
Mr. Olusola: it’s just for a day and I understand you all were not informed on time that’s my mistake and I take the blame. But then what’s the preparation for? Is it a kind of picnic or will it need you to go shopping or invite your family members?
The students began to laugh as Samuel slowly sat down.
Mr. Olusola: But then you all need this trip to understand this course better, that’s my way of practical. You don’t expect me to pack every specimen out there in the forest on my body like a madman, use this form of learning as fun, go out there and see things for yourself and you’ll love it. You don’t need to prepare for anything, the location will be given by me, transportation will be available and other lecturers will be informed and it will only take a few hours before we’ll be back.
He paused and smiled at the student’s responses who agreed on the trip.
Mr. Olusola: That’s good, so every one of you is expected to pay the sum of 2,000 naira only to the course representative before Thursday.
Another round of murmuring busted out from the students who complained of the short duration of time.
“Today is Wednesday, so you mean you can’t use today and tomorrow to have just 2,000 naira? The field trip will be used as the first test, it’s your choice to come or not. Now let’s go into the business of the day.
He dropped and faced the board immediately for the day’s lecture.
After the lecture, some students stayed back in the hall and Tosin burst out laughing.
Samuel: What’s wrong with this one?
Tosin: so will you be inviting your family members for the trip?
Samuel hissed immediately.
Johnson: All this while I never knew you had a mature and complete brain guy, I’m proud of you.
They burst out laughing together.
Tosin: We need safety boots though, only God knows the bush he will take us to on Friday.
Johnson: But na f*ck up be this, I planned on going for a club this Friday.
Samuel: How will it stop you?
Tosin: You didn’t hear him? We will come back and attend lectures depending if we arrive on time.
Samuel: Lectures ke? After going into the forest? Make them try get conscience abeg. As I am stepping off the bus that day, I am going home straight because I can’t miss the fun on Friday, hope you’ll come?
Tosin looked at them as they pinned their eyes on him.
Tosin: You mean me?
Samuel: No my grandfather.
Tosin: No I’ll be tired.
Samuel: Aghhhh Laye. Shey you want to uproot the iroko tree with your bare hands or you will sweep the bush and water the trees on Friday?
Tosin: What is your own? I said I’ll be tired simple.
Samuel: I hear rich kid well done.
The course representative approached them holding with a book.
Abel: Do you have the money for the trip now?
Johnson: I don’t understand as we are POS na? But Thursday never reach na.
Abel: Okay.
He turned to leave but Tosin brought out his phone.
Tosin: Can I transfer the money? I’m not with cash now.

Abel called out his account details and 6,000 naira was transferred to him and they registered their registration numbers on the book before he left.
Samuel: let’s go please, we still have an hour for the next lecture.
They stood up together and left the hall.
At home after lectures, a call came on his phone and Tosin sleepily picked up.
Enitan: Tosin, how are you?
Tosin: mommy I’m fine, good evening
Enitan: Evening, have you eaten?
Tosin: yes mommy I bought food at school.
Enitan: this boy when will you cook and stop buying food?

Enitan: Have you paid the money?
Tosin: Yes I transferred it today so I won’t forget, but it’s fine because you’ll replace it right?
Enitan laughed hearing that.
Enitan: what is your father doing?
Tosin: Daddy’s own is coming soon but it’s just 2,000 na chicken money.
Enitan: Have heard you, have your rest, and don’t forget to pray.
Tosin rolled his eyes and nodded.
