Samsung wants its first tri-foldable smartphone to be better than Huawei Mate XT
Since its launch almost five years ago, Samsung has led the foldable smartphone industry. But with the Magic V3 and OnePlus Open, companies like Honor and Oppo may have introduced more innovation in recent years.
On top of that, Huawei remains the only company to release a so-called ‘tri-fold’, which concertinas from a 10.2-inch tablet to a 6.4-inch smartphone. For reference, while the Mate XT is exclusive to China for now, Huawei is expected to offer the device internationally during Q1 2024.
According to ETNews, Samsung continues to develop an alternative, even if one is not forthcoming just yet. Reportedly, the company has adopted a different approach to the Galaxy Fold, which arrived in early 2019. While that device was launched with numerous shortcomings, such as a tiny cover display and a strange foldable display, Samsung managed to overcome most of these issues by the release of the Galaxy Z Fold2 eighteen months later.
Supposedly, Samsung is focusing on delivering what it believes will be the ‘best’ tri-fold, which ETNews describes as a ‘foldable phone that folds twice’. As it stands, it remains to be seen when Samsung will even show a prototype model, let alone a finished retail product. In the meantime, it has recently released the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, which can still be ordered globally despite its South Korean-exclusive release.
