Pat Nevin claims Billy Gilmour has the potential to play for Liverpool or Manchester City

Billy Gilmour joined Brighton in an £8 million deal from Chelsea.

Gilmour was tipped to cement a place in Chelsea’s first team after making his breakthrough under Frank Lampard but the 21-year-old struggled during his loan spell at Norwich City last season.

The midfielder’s chances of regular playing time under Thomas Tuchel this term looked slim so Chelsea approved his move to Brighton in an £8 million deal last week.

But Nevin feels Gilmour will be at the level of Chelsea’s main Premier League rivals within a few seasons.

‘Billy Gilmour is at a crucial point in his career and the move to Brighton is a brilliant one,’ Nevin told Grosvenor Sport.

‘It’s the right move. Chelsea won’t regret selling him because that’s not the way they think as a club – but they may want to buy him back again.

‘Four or five years down the line, I won’t be surprised if he’s playing in the Manchester City, Liverpool or Chelsea midfield – he’s that technically good.’

Nevin has also described Chelsea’s £75m deal for Wesley Fofana as ‘really cheap’ if the club keep the 21-year-old at Stamford Bridge for several years.

‘If you sign Wesley Fofana for £75million and keep him for the next 10 years – that works out at £10million per year, which is actually really cheap,’; said Nevin.

‘If Chelsea really needed Fofana – which they did – then the fee they paid is absolutely the right number and if they hadn’t signed him this season then I don’t think they would’ve finished in the top four. They wouldn’t have had the quality.’
