No Ronaldo No Problem: Man Utd Doesn’t Need Ronaldo To Survive
Don’t you think Ronaldo came at the wrong time to Manchester United FC?
Hey, hold on, before you come at me ‘cos I’m about to “criticize your GOAT,” kindly take a stroll with me while we reexamine the whole ‘tectonic shift’.
So far, we all can now ‘kinda’ admit that one of the best decision Erik ten Hag has made with his club so far is benching Ronaldo for youngsters to flex their muscles. It played out fine against Liverpool, and now, Southampton.
What other proof do you seriously need to get convinced that Manchester United doesn’t need Cristiano Ronaldo to make a better team?
Ronaldo, just like every other world-class strikers is but a striker –someone they feed to score goals. His only job on the field is just to place the ball at the back of the net and that’s all.
I’d like to make a little reference, uhm, yes, I’m a more of Leo Messi fan than Ronaldo‘s, but I love both players as one of the greatest players of all time. So without any bias, dive right in with me.
About 12 months ago when both GOAT had a switch of clubs, Leo to PSG, Ronaldo back to Manchester United FC, critics all over the world stretched farther on Leo’s success in other clubs aside Barcelona as a ‘not-possible combo’ while claiming Ronaldo already proved he can do it anywhere.
Unfortunately, the reverse happened. Uhm, yeah, Ronaldo did score over 20 goals last season while Leo had little above 10. However, it wasn’t that Leo Messi had an overall bad season (although if compared with his other seasons isn’t cool), he just obviously wasn’t in the right position to strike balls to the back of the net just like he freely does while at FC Barcelona and in Argentina national team. Courtesy of Pochettino’s shortsightedness who couldn’t realize he’s got a game changer in his midst –ended up not doing enough with him.
Leo had to play midfield as he couldn’t get passes, plus Mbappe was all draggy with him to become the highest scorer. Despite missing about 10 games with PSG, he had over 10 assists.
Don’t worry, this content wasn’t about Lionel Messi but Ronaldo, so here’s the take-home;
Before Ronaldo joined Manchester United, the club had players like Bruno Fernandes, Martial, and Rashford, all doing great on their score sheet, but it’s been a different story since Ronaldo joined, this because they had to feed him to score goals.
Unlike Lionel Messi who can assist and create chances for his teammates if not in the position of scoring goals, Ronaldo is wired differently. Maybe the Ronaldo of Manchester United before Real Madrid, but the current Ronaldo hardly create chances, he only scores.
Now, a team like Manchester United who already has players who can score goals but has low creators and defenders, it certainly doesn’t need Ronaldo. Instead, it needs defenders and midfielders.
What we saw against Liverpool and Southampton was what Manchester United used to ‘kinda’ be before Ronaldo with a touch of other players like Martinez, Eriksen, and others. I mean, this team f*cking competed and came out second in EPL a season before the previous one.
So yes, somehow, Ronaldo is not needed in this team. Ronaldo needs an almost complete team without a striker like Man City before signing Haaland, not Manchester United.
