Nigeria To Set Up A National Blind Football Team Called ‘Star Eagles’
Blind football is one of the sports set to make its Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020. Like some other countries, Nigeria is working to dominate in this upcoming category, starting with the formation of a national blind football team!
The Guardian reports that the team will be called ‘Star Eagles’, and the players are currently being scouted through national trials organized by the Para-Athletics Federation of Nigeria.
Bina Foundation, an NGO which has trained over 150 visually impaired people in football, hosted a four-day national trial in Enugu. As part of the groundwork for the formation of the national team, the foundation organized blind football league tournaments last year.
Hopefully, the national team will be well-trained and equipped so they don’t only avoid the unnecessary hassles the Special Eagles went through on their way to the 2018 Amputee Football World Cup, but also stand a chance of actually making history at the Olympics.
