Breaking Down The Top-Four Teams In The Stanley Cup Playoffs
Colorado Avalanche
It’s easy to see why the Colorado Avalanche are the current favorites after a season in which they went 56-19-7 with 119 points.
Mikko Rantanen, who had 91 points on the season, led Colorado. Colorado boasts four players in the top 19 in terms of scoring, including Cale Makar, a young defenseman with 86 points.
Darcy Kuemper, who had the fifth-best save percentage in hockey at 92 percent and has only allowed 2.52 goals per game, has been a standout for the Avalanche. He’s currently 37-12 and has been a major reason this team is the best in the NHL.
Florida Panthers
The Florida Panthers’ season could be argued to have been more impressive than the Colorado Avalanche’s. With 122 points, they were the only team in the NHL to finish ahead of Colorado.
This season, they’ve had significant contributions from a few players, including Jonathan Huberdeau, who has 115 points, the second-most in the NHL. He had 85 assists for the season, which was the most in the NHL this season.
The fact that Sergei Bobrovsky hasn’t always looked great this season could be an issue for the Florida Panthers in the playoffs. Although he has a 91% save percentage, he has given up nearly 2.7 goals per game. He had an incredible record, but that’s mostly because the Panthers have one of the best attacks in the league.
Calgary Flames
The Calgary Flames will enter the Stanley Cup playoffs as the Pacific Division’s top seed. They had a fantastic season, going 50-21-11 with 111 points. As bizarre as it seems, some people may be underestimating how talented this Calgary squad is just because of how well the Avalanche have performed and people’s lack of confidence in their ability to beat them in the playoffs.
Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk each had over 100 points this season, putting Calgary with two guys in the top seven in scoring. With 115 points, Gaudreau finished third in the league, while Tkachuk finished seventh with 103.
Although the Flames have one of the top offenses in the league, one of the main reasons for their success this season has been Jacob Markstrom, who may be the best goalkeeper in the game. He had 92% save percentage and only allowed 2.21 goals per game.
Toronto Maple Leafs
The Toronto Maple Leafs are similar to the Calgary Flames in many ways. Because of how well the Florida Panthers have played, people are forgetting that the Maple Leafs have 115 points and a 54-21-7 record.
Auston Matthews was perhaps the best player in hockey this season, finishing with 106 points, good for seventh in the NHL. He scored 60 goals, which was the most in the league.
Jack Campbell may be the stumbling block for Toronto this season. He had an astounding 31-19-5 record, yet he gave up roughly 2.7 goals per game and had a save percentage of 91%.
