Lewandowski Is A Goal Scorer But Not Lionel Messi
As much as many of us, or let me say; many FC Barcelona fans want to see the club back to what it used to be during Leo Messi‘s era, it’s obvious we won’t be getting it real soon.
The addition of Robert Lewandowski, and Raphinha to the frontline is just a fortification trial but would never be the same as Messi’s. It’s a sad reality that all Barcelona fans need to swallow painfully.
You see in football, it is one thing to know how to score goals, another is being a creator. In this case, Lewandowski is a good goal scorer (world-class!) but not a creator.
Aside from defending, Leo Messi can take any position from midfield to the opponent’s goalpost, he can create from anywhere but it would be quite difficult for Lewandowski to replicate the same.
Again, I don’t want to be too quick to judge Xavi just yet, but for this current Barcelona to become a strong team and a threat to clubs in European competition, Xavi needs to go back and rework his decision on the team selection. Pairing Pedri with Gavi while leaving Franck Kessie and Pjanic on the bench is a very bad idea. Starting Ferran Torres who contributes little to none while missing crucial chances is bad and isn’t cool at all.
Don’t get me wrong, both Pedri and Gavi are young and promising, but the obvious reality is, the expectations on them is way too big than their current experience. If teams like Bayern Munich gets hold of them in the midfield, they won’t even stand a chances to hold them back.
A team without Leo Messi needs a proper midfield combination to impact positively on the attacks.
Before Lewandowski can start shinning on the La Liga highest scorer sheet, he needs good feeders, if not, it’ll be very hard to see him there as expected.
Again, I want to believe Xavi is a genius and is working to get his selection right. Either way, he did a great job against Real Sociedad after subbing in Ansu Fati and Raphinha who changed the game in the second half of the game.
Happy 34th birthday to Robert Lewandowski aka The Goal Machine!
