Lagos govt seeks support to rehabilitate Apapa hospital

The Lagos State Government has said it would need the support of citizens to renew the Apapa General Hospital infrastructure and expand its service delivery.

The state Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, stated this on Wednesday during a stakeholders’ meeting at the hospital residence in Apapa, Lagos.

Abayomi, who was represented at the event by the Director of Service Charter at the Ministry of Health, Mrs Joan Oluyemi, lamented the rate at which staff members of the health facility had migrated.

He said, “To us, as a stakeholder, we believe that everybody’s life will be positively affected by our improvements in our services and we need your support and contribution towards achieving the project of renewing infrastructure and service expansion we want to embark upon.

“The government has done a lot in terms of infrastructure and staffing, but many of us understand the slogans now; a lot of our staff are migrating. But the government has opened a channel that we keep replacing the people that are leaving. We still don’t have enough, but we are working to ensure that our staff members are ready to serve.”

The Permanent Secretary of the Health Service Commission, Dr Ademuyiwa Eniayewun, who was represented by Dr Yinka Otepola, said, “We seek the general advice and generous contribution of residents to deliver on the task of providing quality healthcare to meet the minimum international standards as well as meeting the needs of residents because the government cannot do it alone.”

In his address, the Medical Director of Apapa General Hospital, Dr Ajibola Keshinro, disclosed that the facility had surmounted the challenges of upgrading it thrice since it was established 58 years ago.
