INEC cautions journalists against fake news

The Independent National Electoral Commission has warned reporters against disseminating false, unconfirmed information prior to and during the November 16 poll, three weeks before Ondo State’s governorship election.

Speaking at a media workshop organised by INEC to interact with journalists in Akure the state capital on Tuesday, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information And Voter Education Committee of the INEC, Mr Sam Olumekun stated that the commission had made necessary arrangements with security agencies to ensure that journalists are safe before, during and after the election.

Represented by the Ondo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola, the national commissioner changed journalists in the state to give accurate reportage during the election.

Olumekun said, “As the election draws near, the threat of fake news remains a significant concern. I urge you to exercise caution and be diligent in verifying any information before disseminating it, particularly when it pertains to the Commission’s activities and the electoral process.

“In the lead-up to the election, we count on you to help educate the public on the importance of peaceful participation. Additionally, you must offer balanced coverage of all political parties and candidates ensuring that your reports remain objective and free from bias.

“During the election, your coverage must be both factual and responsible. While we encourage you to report incidents as they happen, this must be done in a manner that does not escalate tensions or incite violence. Your presence at polling units for coverage will also be crucial in assuring the public of the transparency and integrity of the process.”

In his remarks, the Administrative Secretary of the electoral body in the state, Mr Biodun Amosu, said the workshop was designed to equip journalists with comprehensive information on the guidelines, processes, and procedures that will govern the upcoming election.

“As members of the media, you must be well-versed in these processes to ensure accurate reportage and avoid the spread of speculations, misinformation, and disinformation,” the INEC boss said.
