How Samsung turned smartphone into PC, but none noticed
In the near 2017, Samsung showed us how the Galaxy S8 can turn into a computer with a slight movement of the Hand. Called this technology Samsung DeX, which is a reduction from the DEsktop eXperience and then she had only one drawback – the need to use a special dock, which was sold for $ 150.
Subsequently, there was an upgrade of technology and new then Galaxy Note 9 and Tab S4 did not require any docking stations. The technology worked just like that: connect the smartphone via a cable to the monitor and get a full desktop computer. Yes, the computer was not very powerful, but for most tasks, such as typing, viewing content and working in the browser, it was suitable, especially since in the state deployed to the desktop operating system allows you to work with several open Windows in multi-value mode.
While Google developed its portable Chrome OS, and Microsoft brought to mind Windows OS to work on the Surface Go, the new technology from Samsung, no one paid attention. Does it seem strange that really popular portable desktop OS, for which people bought inexpensive laptops and tablets vengeance developed and distributed on the market, and the same operating system, but much more convenient implemented, no one took seriously? I don’t think.
Why people were and still on a Samsung DeX? The answer is quite simple. Because it seems Samsung itself doesn’t care about its product. During the announcement of the new Galaxy S10 flagship devices, the company never mentioned DeX. The impression was that the technology no longer exists, but one thing during the presentation made me think about the opposite: Samsung Galaxy S10+ C 12 GB of RAM.
The thing is that it is impossible to imagine a scenario in which you will need such a huge amount of RAM in the smartphone. I’m not saying that there will never be such a thing that a smartphone will need such a volume of RAM, but when it happens your Galaxy S10+ is already old and covered with dust, lying in a stuffed junk closet. So why modern smartphone so much RAM? You can certainly assume that Samsung, as a manufacturer of memory just is measured with the competition with their gigs, as it were, showing that maybe all of this; and DeX is still alive because no one in the company knows how to remove it from a smartphone.
More logical option seems to be that someone in the walls of Samsung is still not indifferent to the fate of DeX and it is for the comfortable use of the desktop operating system in the Galaxy S10 + implanted such an enchanting amount of RAM. Samsung Galaxy S10+ can be a full-fledged desktop computer on Linux and all it needs is for the company to bring to mind the operating system itself, making it suitable and convenient for use by the average user.
Probably everyone has heard about Linux. The name of this operating system on hearing, but not on computers of the majority. This OS is not very popular due to the fact that most SOFTWARE developers do not even consider it as a platform for their programs, and therefore the amount of software for it is negligible. Changes in all this turmoil can begin thanks to Google and Microsoft, as both companies are interested in developing Linux for their needs. Already on Windows, you can run programs for Linux using the command line, and Chrome OS has native support for applications with unpopular operating systems.
I think Samsung is just waiting to see what Microsoft or Google will do with Linux. If at least someone will make Linux suitable and easy to use, then Samsung will have everything ready by this point. The company will simply update the system and then it will be enough for any user to buy a cheap cable, connect a smartphone to the monitor and a full-fledged PC in front of you. And no need to buy any Chromebook or tablet on Windows.
Have you ever heard of Samsung DeX? Do you use this strange thing?
