Among the many technical improvements for 2022 season, the FIA has decided to keep the V6 engine that has been in use since 2014, know the F1 engine suppliers for 2022
However, some aspects of the engine’s efficiency and performance were compromised. We take a closer look at the Engine of F1 cars in 2022.
Teams have until March 1st to freeze any changes or upgrades to the ICE, turbo, MGU-H, engine oil, exhaust system, and fuel parameters for the 2022 Formula 1 season. The deadline for the Energy Store, Control Electronics, and MGU-K has been pushed back to the 1st of September.
After the deadline has passed, the freeze will only be lifted in exceptional circumstances. A team that is far behind its competitors may be granted a reprieve. Following an appeal by the concerned team, F1 will make the final decision. The same power unit will be used until 2025, with FIA/F1-approved changes and enhancements.

Plan of Changes in Engine by FIA and Reaction of F1 Teams
The FIA initiated talks with existing constructors and prospective new manufacturers in 2017 about the next generation of engines, which was supposed to debut in 2021 but was pushed out to 2022 owing of the COVID-19 epidemic. The initial idea was intended to simplify engine designs, reduce costs, encourage new entries, and respond to complaints levelled at the 2014 engine generation. The 1.6 L V6 configuration was to be kept, but the sophisticated Motor Generator Unit–Heat (MGU-H) system was to be dropped.
The Motor Generator Unit–Kinetic (MGU-K) would be more powerful, with a greater emphasis on driver deployment and a more flexible introduction to allow for tactical use. The proposal also called for the introduction of standardized components and design parameters to make components produced by all manufacturers compatible with one another in a system dubbed “plug in and play”.
A further proposal to allow four-wheel drive cars was also made, with the front axle driven by an MGU-K unit—as opposed to the traditional driveshaft—that functioned independently of the MGU-K providing power to the rear axle, mirroring the system developed by Porsche for the 919 Hybrid race car.
Steps taken by FIA and Deadline for Changes
However, due to the fact that no engine supplier applied for F1 entrance in the years 2021 and 2022, the MGU-H, a more powerful MGU-K, and a four-wheel drive system were all shelved, with the possibility of reintroduction in 2026. Instead, the teams and the FIA agreed to a significant improvement in body/chassis aerodynamics to encourage more on-track clashes at tighter distances.
They also agreed to raise the alcohol content of fuel from 5.75 percent to 10%, as well as implement a power unit design freeze for the years 2022-2025, with the ICE, turbocharger, and MGU-H being frozen on March 1st and the energy store, MGU-K, and control electronics being frozen on September 1st during the 2022 season.

Honda, the outgoing engine supplier in 2021, was adamant on keeping the MGU-H engine, and Red Bull, which took over the engine production project, agreed. The 4WD system was supposed to be based on the Porsche 919 Hybrid, but Porsche decided not to be an F1 engine supplier in 2021-2022.
