Does Chelsea need to bring back Eden Hazard to strengthen the team?

Chelsea football club had a very good start in the premier league this season. But in November and December, they lost many important points that cost them the first place. Now, they are securely in the top four, but lost the chance to win the title. On top of that, several important players received serious unfortunate injuries that further weakened the team. There were rumors that Chelsea was going to sign some players to strengthen the team.

Rumors said that Thomas Tuchel, Chelsea’s manager, wanted to sign Adama Traore from Watford. This wasn’t very pleasant information for Chelsea fans as they didn’t want Adama Traore in their club. Chelsea has gotten very good at signing players that warm the bench or go on loan until their contract ends. That same money could have been used more wisely on academy players for example. 

Eden Hazard was yet another player that was linked with Chelsea. Rumors said that the blues might sign the Belgian. Hazard had a very rough career after leaving Chelsea in 2019. He signed with Real Madrid and was considered as a successor of Cristiano Ronaldo. But unfortunately, his performance vastly degraded. The Belgian was receiving many injuries and missed most of the games. But he didn’t manage to do anything productive while playing either. Needless to say, Real Madrid fans are disappointed by the transfer and are urging the club to sell him.

It has to be mentioned that Eden Hazard served the club admirably and helped the team to win 2 premier leagues and other titles. The Belgian was phenomenal on an individual level as well as he was considered the best player on the blues side. But it might be risky for Chelsea to spend millions of dollars on their former player who isn’t half as good as he was years ago. However, many fans are feeling nostalgic, and there’s a pretty good chance that the problems with Eden Hazard are just in his head. Returning to Chelsea might give him the boost in confidence he needs to start playing well again. 

But his return to Chelsea might not be good either for the club and neither for The Belgian. Some people are mentioning Philippe Coutinho’s case as an argument. He left Liverpool, played very poorly in Barcelona, signed with Aston Villa, and started playing well again for now. But it doesn’t mean that Hazard’s case will be the same. 

For example, Callum Hudson-Odoi or Christian Pulisic is in far better shape than Eden Hazard right now. The Belgian is already 30 years old so as time goes, he will not get better. But other young players definitely can. Therefore, it’s unclear why he will help to strengthen the team, because it would be an unreasonable move from the manager Thomas Tuchel to give Hazard more playing time than to young players. In addition to that, the current manager is not accustomed to working with Eden Hazard, so it’s hard to say why he would be inclined to bring him back. 

Chelsea’s current setup barely has a place for all the attacking players at the club right now. Adding Hazard will only make the situation worse. If Hazard returns and sits on the bench the whole time it would be unclear why Chelsea brought him back. And the club would have to pay Belgian very high wages, or otherwise it would be pointless to do the transfer.  And if he gets on the main squad, talented young players will be in a difficult situation as their playing time decreases. Chelsea has many players sent out on loan already, the club doesn’t need any more additions to the squad. 

It’s clear that Hazard’s return to Chelsea is just a sentimental move and has nothing to do with reinforcing the team. In our opinion, Manchester United already made that mistake by bringing in Cristiano Ronaldo, when they already had fantastic forwards like Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial. Chelsea should not repeat the same mistake.
