Burna Boy,Tems and Ayra Starr miss out as Taylor Swift, others bag 2024 MTV VMAwards

The Nigerian trio Damini Ogulu, better known as Burna Boy; Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems; and

Oyinkansola Aderibigbe, well known as Ayra Starr, were all unable to win a trophy at the MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday night.

With her single “Water,” South African musician Tyla defeated Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, and Tems to win the male-dominated category of best Afrobeats.

After accepting the prize in Elmont, New York, Tyla remarked, “The global impact that Water had on the world just proves that African music can be pop music, too.”

She noted that the award was “bittersweet” because “there’s a tendency to group all African artists under Afrobeats … African music is so diverse. It’s more than just Afrobeats.”

Meanwhile, Taylor Swift dominated the MTV Video Music Awards, becoming the most decorated solo artist at the VMAs of all time after winning seven categories, including the night’s top award, video of the year.
