Brendan Rodgers would be ‘logical’ appointment at Chelsea and reveals Graham Potter worry – Rio Ferdinand
Rio Ferdinand says Brendan Rodgers would be a ‘logical’ appointment at Chelsea following Thomas Tuchel’s sacking, but has revealed his concern over the club’s move for Brighton boss Graham Potter.
Chelsea’s hierarchy are preparing to hold talks with Potter about replacing Tuchel, who they axed following a disappointing start to the season.
The Blues have dropped points in half of their Premier League games this term and suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in their Champions League opener on Tuesday night.
While Chelsea are going through a difficult period, Ferdinand says he ‘cannot fathom’ Tuchel’s sacking.
‘Listen, he came in when they were desperate and needed him to steady the ship,’ the former Manchester United and England defender said on his YouTube channel.
‘He did that and also won the Champions League, got to two domestic cup finals. It was a phenomenal run under the circumstances. Yes it’s been a difficult start to the season but I can’t fathom it, I can’t understand it.’
Potter, 47, has emerged as the favourite to replace Tuchel at Stamford Bridge and Ferdinand insists he has done an ‘absolutely fabulous’ job at Brighton, who are currently fourth in the Premier League.
But Ferdinand has questioned whether Potter is ready to join an elite club like Chelsea who boast a number of superstar players.
He added: ‘Potter has done an absolutely fabulous job at Brighton. They’ll be reluctant to let him go I’m sure.
‘He will be courted by bigger clubs but would he take this job? He’s a great coach and as soon as he went into Brighton their style of play changed. He’s got a clear idea of how they want to play. On the grass he would be great.
‘A lot of the questions would be around if he is able to handle the egos and the stature of players at Chelsea? He’s never had that experience.
‘He’s not someone who has proved he can win trophies yet either. So there are things that could go against him. But I think the younger players at Chelsea would welcome him.’
If Chelsea decide against appointing Potter, Ferdinand reckons Leicester City manager Rodgers would be a ‘logical’ target.
Rodgers spent two years as manager of Chelsea’s reserve team at the start of his coaching career and has since had spells at Liverpool and Celtic as well as Leicester.
‘I think that would be logical and not too an outlandish appointment,’ Ferdinand said. ‘He’s been at Chelsea before and proven elsewhere he can win trophies and build a football club.
‘He’s won the FA Cup with Leicester, a team not considered a favourite for that competition. Yes, they’re struggling right now but I think a lot of that is down to the transfer window and a lack of investment.
‘Their position now doesn’t reflect the quality of manager that Rodgers is. But can the owners see past that because they won’t want to sack Tuchel and appoint a manger at the bottom of the Premier League.
‘I don’t think they will be looking at his history and his body of work that would put him in a position to be a candidate.’
In his 20-month spell as Chelsea manager, former Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund boss Tuchel lifted three trophies and won 60 of his 100 matches in charge.
