BREAKING: iTunes Is Gone Forever!
Good bye songs for 99 cents, good bye Game of Thrones episodes for 2.99… The iTunes platform, launched in 2001, revolutionized the music industry and VOD, but has now gone forever.
With the new MacOS update, Apple has launched the official withdrawal of the software, as it announced at its annual conference, the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), in June 2019.
The End Of An Era
Once a symbol of the download sector, the platform seems to have done its time. To replace it, the company has divided it into three autonomous applications, which already exist on iPhone and iPad: “Music”, “TV” and “Podcasts”.
The platform’s decline is due mainly to the growth of streaming, which has absorbed the vast majority of sales. According to Cnet, album downloads represented just 11% of music industry sales in 2019, compared to 63% in 2012.
By closing its historic platform, Apple has confirmed the victory of streaming over downloads. After displaying reticence towards the practice for a long time, the company finally launched its own streaming platform in 2015,
Apple Music, which now leads the sector in the United States.
The withdrawal of the software marks the end of an era: no more iPod syncing with iTunes, no more downloading tracks from a CD to your music library. Apple has finally understood: to stay in the game, it had to take this inevitable step.
