Anthony Joshua accepts Tyson Fury’s 60-40 fight offer with 17 December date already booked at ‘Principality Stadium’
Anthony Joshua has accepted Tyson Fury’s 60-40 fight offer with Eddie Hearn pushing for the fight to take place in December, rather than November.
‘The Gypsy King’ has this week offered Joshua an immediate route back into the world title picture following back-to-back defeats to Oleksandr Usyk to challenge for his WBC heavyweight title.
Fury, who is determined to fight before the end of the year, revealed on Tuesday he has offered the former champion a 60-40 split of the fight purse in his favour.
Fury’s promoter Frank Warren also confirmed an offer would be sent over with Hearn now telling IFL TV they have accepted the deal which also includes a rematch option.
Fury was eager for the fight to take place in November but with Joshua just coming out of the Usyk rematch, Hearn has viewed December as a more realistic window.
The Matchroom chief also revealed Queensberry Promotions, Fury’s promoters, have already secured the Principality Stadium in Cardiff for 17 December.
‘We went back this morning. I spoke to AJ about the offer, we think, I think he deserves more than 40, but he’s happy,’ Hearn said.
‘I went back this morning and said we accept 60-40. We want that reversed in the rematch because rightfully so, you’re the champion here you want the big split which I think is fair and we want to do the fight in December.
‘Interestingly, Queensberry have that date, 17 December. I think that was the date he was meant to fight Dereck Chisora.
‘In essence, we accept the offer, we confirmed that this morning, lots of conversations were had. I don’t know whether this is a play to let this breakdown and fight someone well under par and say ‘we tried to make the AJ fight’ or to try get the Usyk fight agreed for a lot more money.
‘Or maybe he just wants to fight. We are going through all those processes.
He added: ‘What I can tell you is we accept 60-40. I don’t want to get people too excited because I have my doubts. But what I can tell you is AJ is ready to fight in December. The terms, the offer of that fight is fine. So let’s see if we can iron out the other bits.’
Following his split decision defeat to Usyk in Saudi Arabia, Joshua immediately signalled his intent to return to the ring before the end of 2022.
Since then, Hearn has maintained that Joshua’s return date would be in December even prior to talk of the Fury fight re-emerging, having originally targeted a top-15 ranked opponent for his fighter.
‘I don’t want to throw out names but anyone in the top 15,’ Hearn told Metro.co.uk last week.
‘It is not going to be Wilder or Whyte next, but the others around the top 15 with the governing bodies.
‘I don’t see him having a problem fighting them. He is not going to want to go back and fight an embarrassing fight, he doesn’t want that and we don’t want that. We want to have him in fights where he can continue to learn and progress.’
