[Music] Eminem – Darkness
Thrill your day with this amazing song from Eminem titled “Darkness“.
“Darkness” is a song by American rapper Eminem, from his eleventh studio album Music to Be Murdered By. Its music video is the first video released from the album. The album and the “Darkness” music video were released simultaneously on January 17, 2020, with no prior announcement.
Eddie Fu, staff writer at Genius, wrote: “The track channels the perspective of Stephen Paddock—who killed 58 people in the 2017 Las Vegas shooting—to make a point about gun control.” Spencer Kornhaber noted in The Atlantic: “The song and the video do not simply restage the massacre, though. Eminem is attempting a double entendre, in which most of the lyrics could equally refer to the rapper himself, sitting in a hotel room, nervous before a concert.”
The song interpolates the 1965 song “The Sound of Silence” by Simon & Garfunkel, using a piano version of its recurring guitar motif and its opening line, “Hello darkness, my old friend.”
On January 17, 2020, a music video of the song was released on Eminem’s YouTube channel. The video follows the same plot as the lyrics. During the first two verses, it alternates between showing Eminem in a dark room wearing a hoodie and an unidentified person in a hotel room wearing the same hoodie, surrounded by alcohol and ammunition. At the beginning of the third verse, the person takes off the hood and reveals himself to be the Las Vegas shooter, before opening fire on the concert-goers from the hotel window.
The video ends with the message: “When will it end? When enough people care. Register to vote at vote.gov. Make your voice heard and help change the gun laws in America.” A center in Las Vegas which provides resources to those who were affected by the attack was contacted by local victims who were disturbed by the video, and advised others who felt victimized to seek assistance.[citation needed] – Wikipedia

Some Quotable Lyrics
I don’t wanna be alone, I don’t wanna be
I don’t wanna be alone in the darkness
I don’t wanna be alone in the darkness
I don’t wanna be alone in the darkness anymore
(Hello darkness, my old friend)
Here I am, alone again
Can’t get out of this hole I’m in
It’s like the walls are closin’ in
You can’t help me, no one can
I can feel these curtains closin’
I go to open ’em
But something pulls ’em closed again
(Hello darkness, my old friend)
Feels like I’m loathing in Las Vegas
Haven’t got the vaguest why I’m so lost
But I’d make you this small wager
If I bet you, I’ll be in tomorrow’s paper
Who would the odds favor?
(Hello darkness, my old friend)

I would like to say some things that maybe some do not know:
– The song is inspired by the Las Vegas massacre of 2017, in which Stephen Paddock, a 65-year-old early retiree, perpetrated at the iconic Mandalay Bay hotel in Las Vegas and began shooting into the crowd at a country music concert, killing 50 people and wounding 500. Although the message that Eminem is trying to send is about the US arms restriction, it has focused on this massacre, as it is the deadliest in the US after 9/11 (and in the video clip official, at the end of it, Eminem appears watching multiple televisions, each of which announces several massacres, such as Sandy Hook, Columbine, the Texas institute, etc.)
– The song itself has a double meaning (although this in Spanish is not appreciated), on the one hand, it talks about the feelings and thoughts of Eminem about to perform a concert, and on the other, it talks about the feelings and thoughts of the Las Vegas shooter
This is seen in phrases like:
• 0:45 “I’m like my father. You might think I even knew him”
Eminem’s father abandoned him and his mother when Eminem was very young, and the Las Vegas shooter didn’t get to know his father either, as he was among the most wanted in the FBI at the time.
• 0:57 “Fuck the Colt 45 (translated as a gun). I’ll need something stronger. If I open a bottle, it better be Vodka.”
The Colt 45 in America is an alcoholic beverage and a weapon
Speaking from Eminem, it would be like: “Fuck the Colt 45, I need something stronger like Vodka”, he means that to get through his nerves he needs something stronger than the Colt 45 drink
Speaking from the shooter’s perspective, he means hit the Colt 45, I need something stronger so I can kill more people. Continuing with this, at 1:03 it says “round, after round, after round, I’m getting drunk … That’s a lot of” shots, “huh?”
In English, shot means both shot and a small drink of an alcoholic beverage, and loaded means both intoxicating and arming
From Eminem’s perspective, it is that he is having one round of Vodka after another, claiming that he has had many shots of Vodka and is getting drunk.
From the shooter’s perspective, it refers to the rounds of ammunition of the weapon, which is being armed, and then says that it is a lot of shots (shots)
• 2:02 “And what if nobody shows up? Panic shows up”
From Eminem’s perspective, he’s afraid that no one will go to his show and feel “slighted”.
From the shooter’s perspective, if not many people show up, his plan would be thwarted and he would not be able to kill as many people.
• 2:32 in the US, magazines means both magazines and ammunition
From Eminem’s perspective, he sees magazines scattered on the ground, from the shooter’s perspective, he sees the ammunition of his guns thrown on the ground.
The song is full of phrases like that with double meanings
I’m very sorry to have gone on so long, but it seemed interesting to me to talk about this and for people to realize the true meaning of this wonderful work of art.
