Jackson and Bill Bottrell, wrote, composed and produced the song.

Epic Records released it on November 11, 1991 as the first single from the album, and it became instantly successful.

The single reached Number 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100, UK Singles chart and every other country where it charted, except Germany, Portugal, Austria and the Netherlands (where it entered top three).

Its music video is also infamous for generating lots of controversy.
