According to Google, over 45million Nigerians currently have access to the internet. These 45million people which may include you and I accesses the internet through 3 means; our personal Laptops and PC, mobile devices, and through cyber cafe (public computers). Browsing has become almost daily routine for everyone us, either for business purpose, entertainment, or research and education.

Hundreds of millions of hours are spent daily by those who have personal devices for accessing the internet, and another hundreds of millions of hours in Cyber Cafe by those who doesn’t have their own Laptop and internet connection.

Since this is a start up stuff, we here at ALL NAIJA ENTERTAINMENT will focus on mini cyber cafe using any internet connection that offers unlimited download. Starting a mini cyber cafe using simplified internet subscription packages. Some of the GSM network doesn’t offer unlimited download. However, some may have similar packages, you’ll need to find out if your network of choice have similar package to go with. Otherwise, you’ll have to settle with the ones available.

How to Start a Cyber Cafe Business in Nigeria

Do you have interest in starting a cyber cafe business in your area? Do you need to know what it takes and the requirements for starting a cyber cafe in Nigeria. If you answered “YES” to the above asked questions then you should keep reading because this article is solely dedicated for that purpose.

In this post we are going to look into the following features:

  • What is cyber cafe?
  • Is a cyber cafe still a viable business in Nigeria?
  • How to set up a cyber cafe
  • The equipment needed to start an internet cafe
  • What is the potential profit in an internet cafe business in Nigeria?

What is a Cyber Cafe or Internet Cafe?

In Nigeria, a cyber cafe or internet cafe can be said to be a business where customers are offered access to personal computers that are connected to the internet and are made to pay a fee or charge for using those computers. Here, customers pay for using these computers for a specified amount of time. Hence, they are offered token vouchers to represent the allotted time and cash made.

Is Cyber Cafe still a viable business in Nigeria?

The answer to this question is an emphatic “YES”. Internet cafe is and will always remain a good business to venture into in this century. Here are my reasons.

It is true that the advent of smart phones has made some negative impact on the cafe business but it not totally eliminated it. Yeah, we can now browse the internet at cheaper rates from our mobile devices but that’s just about all we can do. We cannot scan, print, photo copy or take standardized photos with our devices. Now let us take a look at the services that are offered in cyber cafes that still makes them relevant in Nigeria today. They include but are not restricted to the following:

  • Photocopy services
  • Scanning services
  • Printing services
  • Graphic services
  • Typing services
  • Other computer services (e.g. online job applications, online visa applications, etc.)

These are computer services you cannot typically do from the four walls of your home. Even if you have a printer at home, you possibly cannot print out and photocopy a 500 paged document without having to refill your printing ink time and time again. And this will cost you more at the long run. However, if you succeed in printing out your documents, you will need to bind them, scan or laminate some of them. Another task you cannot do at home.

Until now, running a cyber cafe has been a huge capital intensive business. You’ll need to invest in heavy broadband, buy huge infrastructure like V-Sat, do computer networking, and server administration; before you’d talk of paying for the bandwidth which runs into tens of thousands of Naira. At the end, what you’ll get will be nothing more than epileptic services.

Now is the time to be in business of your own, that’s what we are trying to achieve on this website, to help as many Nigerians as possible to start a business of their own. This mini cyber cafe is one viable business any serious person must think about seriously. If you’re ready to get started, here are steps you’ll need to take to start your cafe business.

If you want to start a cyber cafe business in Nigeria then here are the basic factors you must consider:

– Business Plan

An old adage says that “he who fails to plan has planned to fail”. As with every other business, you must do a proper feasibility study and then write a detailed business plan before starting your cyber café business in Nigeria. Do not under estimate the power of a business plan because in the course of writing your cyber café business plan you will be able to determine the following:

  • Where to locate your cyber café business.
  • How much capital that you need to set up your business.
  • Who are your targeted audience is.
  • Who your competitors are.
  • How you intend to promote your business.
  • And the potential profit you intend to make within a stipulated time.
  • Possible pitfalls and mistake in the business.

Location

When you consider setting up a cyber café, you should situate your business in a well-known area so that people can find you easily. If your business office is swamped by other businesses, make sure you erect signposts and direction beacons so that your clients can find you. You do not want a situation where your customers will have to spend 30 minutes looking for your cyber café. You should also consider the safety of your customers who will visit your business so do not use neighborhoods that are notorious. Ample parking space is a big plus. Potential places to site your cyber café business are: in front of university gates, government parastatals and office complexes.

With these few illustrations of mine, you can see that a cyber cafe will always remain a feasible business in Nigeria for a long long time.

Below are some few quick help processes..

1. Get an Empty Shop

Look for a small affordable shop within where you live or anywhere you can find it, let it be possibly in a busy place but not necessarily very busy place because it seems everyone is browsing the internet these days, as long as people are living there, you are okay.

Depending on where you get the shop, the average rate is N1,000 – N6,000 per month. In some parts of Lagos, the price could be as high as N9,000 to N12,000 per month. Go for the cheaper ones, they are everywhere. You will need to pay for one year (1500 x 12 = N18,000) and some other charges like the popular agreement fee. Just budget around N30,000 to N100,000 for the shop, you may not spend all.

2. Furnish Your Shop

You’ll need furniture equipment (Tables and Chairs), Put AC if you can afford it (a tokunbo split unit is ab

out N30,000, you can get cheaper wall AC) if not, just buy ceiling fans or standing fans for N4,000 each.

Paint your shop if it’s not yet painted and make sure it looks very nice, branding is everything in business as that will help you attract more customers and stay ahead of your competitors. Put TV in your shop too, for your customers entertainment. Generator is a must, except if Nigeria’s power supply changes for better tomorrow but for now, you must get a generator (N23,000) if you hope to be in business.
3. Source For Desk Top Computers –

You can get them in any quantity you want at The Computer Village in Ikeja, Lagos. But if you’re not in Lagos, then look for it in any hardware market near you. Don’t get any scrap and call it computer, go for fairly used CPU with higher memories and processing speed.

Don’t buy those old big outdated N1,000 Computer Monitors! Get Flat screen monitors with good image display, they aren’t more than N7,000 each and your customers will definitely like it.

3. Grab Your Unlimited Download Package

With the unlimited download and the high speed connectivity which is ideal to the type of business we are looking at.

QUICK TIPS:  You can use MikroTik Routers and Wireless as your default page loader for users.

The pricing is very competitive with varieties of subscription packages, chose the package and hardware type that suits you most.

You don’t need much after these, all you need now is to put your equipment together and start your business. You can network your GSM Internet connection to the maximum of five devices. If you charge your customers N100 per hour and all your computers are occupied, you’ll be making N500 per hour. Multiply that by how many hours each worked, you’ll have something like this: N500 X 12 =  N6,000 daily from your modest investment!

In a month, you’ll be making N6,000 x 26 = N156,000. Assuming all days are not the same, you be making at least N100,000 Monthly.

Final thought,

According to the definition of Business which means “The activity of providing goods and services involving financial, commercial and industrial aspects“.
Business is a game of lose and win, Most winners today are those that refused to quit yesterday but decided to take one more step. To succeed in any business management, you need “patience” and more “marketing strategies. Don’t just give up because it didn’t work out as planned.

Be Consistence
Be Strong
Be Active
And Never stop breeding new ideas!

Keep TRYING!
We here at ALL NAIJA ENTERTAINMENT bids you luck as you go about trying new business idea this year!….
