[STORY] BEHIND CHURCH DOORS (Episode 34)
Episode 34.
TIA
When Pastor Ruth leaves, I grab the cheque and stare at it- Thirty Thousand Kwacha, is this what she thinks I am worth? I pace back and forth, unable to control my anger. Who does Pastor Ruth think she is and how dare she think that I can be bought? How dare she think that she could just walk into my house and ask me to quit my job and leave a church that has become my home? I didn’t follow her husband, he followed me, he expressed his interest in me. There’s no way I am leaving without a fight. If Kingsely doesn’t want me anymore then he should face me? He should tell me to my face that he needs to be left alone.
After taking a few deep breaths, I pick up my bag, stuff the cheque inside and walk out of the house. As I get into my car, the growling of my stomach reminds me I haven’t eaten my breakfast. Ignoring my hunger, I drive out anyway but on my way to the office, I stop at the Cafeteria and get some breakfast for Bishop and I.
It’s almost 9:00 when I arrive at the church office so I quickly get settled at my desk before I head to the Bishop’s office. His car is parked outside so I know he is already in.
With his breakfast in my hand,I open his door and walk in. He is talking on the phone but he looks up at me surprisingly. I place his breakfast on the table in front of him and wait for him to finish talking on the phone.
“Good morning,” I politely say when he hangs up his phone.
“Good morning!” He says coldly.
“I brought breakfast.”
“Thank you and I would appreciate it if you knock before barging into my office.”
“Excuse me?”
“I don’t want you walking into my office as if you own it Tia. Always knock.”
“Since when was this rule put up?”
“Is there anything you need? I have a zoom meeting in the next few minutes.”
“Did I do anything wrong Kingsley?”
“It’s Bishop K for you my dear.”
I laugh. I laugh so loud it hurts, “you are joking right?” I try to wrap my hands around him but he pushes me off.
“I am a married man named Tia, a Bishop for that matter, please stop throwing yourself at me.”
“This isn’t happening. You are joking right?”
“No I am not. I don’t want to do this anymore, my wife found out about us and she is not in a good place emotionally.”
“The same wife you said you didn’t care about? Have you told her this affair was ordained by God and she can’t come against it?
“God doesn’t ordain affairs Tia.”
“But that’s what you told me.”
“Listen, my meeting is about to start. Let’s talk about this later.”
“Okay. I can wait. I just hope by the time we talk you have thought things through. I will be ready for that apology.”
I walk out of the office angrily, I sit back at my desk and I try to eat , but my appetite is gone so I push the food away and try to get some work done but my mind is running wild with thoughts. The entire day I am up and about attending to the Bishop’s guests.
Fridays are usually busy and crowded over here because he spends time praying for people with different problems individually. By the time he is done, it’s almost 18, I am exhausted and hungry but I am not leaving until we talk.
“You are still here?” He asks.
“Yes, we have to talk.”
“Let’s meet at the apartment.”
“Okay.”
He leaves and I lock up the office and church premises before I get into my car and drive to his apartment. When I get there, he is in the shower so I use that time to make myself something to eat. I make noodles and top it with mince sauce within ten minutes in the microwave. You can read more of these episodes from ohene ome on+233544142683.
When he walks into the kitchen a couple of minutes later, I am sitting at the table eating.
“I was very hungry.”
“I will wait for you to finish eating then.”
“You don’t want some?”
“No. I will eat at home with my wife.”
His words sting but I pretend not to be affected by them and continue eating. When I am done eating, I clear the table and clean the plates before I join him in the living room.
“Your wife wrote me a thirty thousand cheque to stay away from you. She was at my house this morning.”
“I know.”
“What’s going on?”
“I want to focus on my marriage. This can’t go on. I am sorry. You keep the money, that will be compensation for the time you spent with me. That child you are carrying is for your husband. You and I never happened.”
“Kingsley you can’t do this to me. I thought you loved me, you said God wanted us to be together and….,”
“I am sorry I lied about that. It was the devil that pushed me to you. I have repented and I am trying to make peace with God.”
And that’s when the tears start to fall from my eyes. There is no control over them as they fall down my face.
“I am sorry. You need to make peace with God too, repent and ask for forgiveness. He is a fair God, he will forgive you. And when he does focus on your marriage and the child you are expecting, also ask him to help you resist temptation.”
“Kingsley please,” I plead, holding on to his legs. Please don’t do this to us.
“You need to leave. I have to go home.”
“I am sorry dear. There’s nothing I can do. Stop embarrassing yourself and leave.”
I look up at him, hoping he will change his mind but his face is devoid of emotions. So I stand up and grab my bag, “if I have offended you in any way please forgive me. This isn’t the end, I will give you some time to cool off and then we can talk again.”
With that I leave his house, hoping the next time we talk he will come back to his senses. This is all Pastor Ruth’s fault. I hate that woman.
