Arsen Zakharyan reveals he was interested in moving to Chelsea before the deal fell through
Dynamo Moscow playmaker Arsen Zakharyan has admitted he agreed a deal to move to Chelsea last month, before the transfer collapsed.
The 19-year-old midfielder was a key target for Thomas Tuchel, who wants to bolster his options in the middle of the park.
The Russian midfielder has a £12.6million release clause in his contract and Chelsea were ready to activate it, as they were aware of interest from other parties.
However, the move was blocked because Chelsea would have struggled to transfer the cash to the Russian club due to Russian’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
But Zakharyan is not giving up on his hopes of moving to Chelsea, with the playmaker hopeful that an arrangement can be sorted in January.
‘There was an offer, but it just didn’t work out. You probably know the reasons,’ he told Sport Express.
‘How could I refuse? Of course, I agreed [to the move].
‘I hope everything will be fine. The next window? Maybe.
‘Of course, the level there is much higher than in the Russian Premier League, but everything is possible.
‘Maybe it would work there. I could always go on loan.’
Todd Boehly and Tuchel are in agreement that the side’s midfield is an area of priority and the German will be given significant funds to invest in the next two windows.
Edson Alvarez, the Ajax midfielder, was a key target in the final days of the window but Chelsea failed in a £40m move for the Mexican.
Ajax were unwilling to sell having already lost the likes of Antony and Lisandro Martinez.
