[STORY] IMPERSONATION (Episode 10)
Episode 10.
The bang on my door in what felt like a few minutes after I’d just closed my eyes to sleep, woke me up that morning.
.
I groggily got out of bed and walked towards the door. I threw it open and behold, Patience.
.
“Patience?” I asked, rubbing my eyes to be sure it was indeed the same Patience I know.
“No be only Patience, na Vawolence. Mstcheeeeeew! Comot for road make I for see road pass jare”. Kate threw wittily at me, as she maneuvered past me into the room.
.
I stood there for a second, trying to process what had just happened.
“Why would I have mistook Kate for Patience? Could it be the sleep?” I thought to myself.
Then I remembered that I’d thought about Patience shortly before I drifted away to sleep.
.
I couldn’t get Patience’s phone number before I left Port Harcourt and with the situation of things between Kate and me, asking her for Patience’s number would have been a terrible idea.
And even though Kate’s brothers and I kept in touch, I couldn’t possibly ask them for Patience’s phone number either, for obvious reasons.
Though we’ve only known each other for “two minutes”, I think I’ve missed Patience.
.
“Why did you put off your phone in the middle of our conversation?” Kate asked, as she dramatically approached me, with smiles that I found rather awkward, splattered all over her face.
Kate halted at a very close proximity from me still locking gazes as the smile on her face got broader.
Kate held me tightly in a hug.
.
“Thank you Moshood. I’m sorry to have allowed my emotions to get the better part of me. I undermined your capabilities to deliver and for that, I’ll like to make it up to you. Tell me what you want. Anything at all and If it’s within my capacity to do, be rest assured that you got it.” Kate said, still clenched tightly onto me.
.
Trust me, I was confused too.
.
I had no idea what was going on, nor what Kate had meant by all the gibberish she’d just spewed.
“I don dey suspect say this girl head dey touch once once, e be like say e don start again fa”.
.
I opened my mouth with the intent to ask for clarity on everything Kate had just said but my mouth got shushed by her lips to it.
.
That was it. All the evidence I needed to know that indeed, Kate had finally gone “mad”.
.
This act caught me unaware. So much so that for the next five seconds, I stood rooted to the ground, pinching myself, hoping I would wake up from this dream.
I finally regained consciousness and pushed Kate off.
.
“What are you doing, K?” I asked, almost disgustedly.
“Oh! Forgive me Moshood. I got carried away. I am so excited right now that I just had to see you; to ask you how you were able to pull off this miracle”.
“Miracle ke? What miracle?” I asked, rather confused
“The situation with my parents, Moshood. I was summoned home. I just got back this morning. I had the uber driver bring me here straight from the airport.”
.
Kate seemed so excited in the delivery of those lines. So much so, that she paid little attention to the facial expression of confusion I had on, staring back at her.
.
“Kate! What in heaven’s name are you talking about? Why were you summoned and what has that got to do with me?”
.
Having realized how truly lost I was, Kate smiled, heaved a sigh, then again, dramatically began to walk towards the chair at the corner of my room.
As soon as Patience sunk into the chair, she swung one leg beautifully across the other, then motioned me to take a seat too.
Without wasting any time, I did.
.
“I had an order that needed to be delivered in Owerri two days ago. This particular item is very delicate and costs a small fortune. The customer is one of my biggest and I had to ensure that this goods got to her in one piece. In my comparison of the options of delivery method I had to choose from, my father called me on the phone, asking if I was free to come over…”
“…come over to where?” I asked, to be sure I was following the story Kate was telling. A story that’s already started on a confusing note.
.
“Hmmm. Over to Port Harcourt o. This was rather strange because the old man has never demanded my presence in that manner before. Well, I finally found a courier company that had me pay an extra cost for insurance on the goods and the moment my mind had been put to rest about the safe delivery of this product, I jumped on the next available flight. Paul picked me up from the airport. On our drive home, I tried getting him to spill; to tell me what the reason for summoning me could have been but Paul insisted that he had no idea…”
.
Kate was already driving me crazy with these unnecessary details.
“What have I got to do with something someone ordered in Owerri or who picked you up from the airport, Kate? TELL ME WHAT ALL OF THESE HAVE TO DO WITH ME AND SPARE ME THIS LONG STORY JARE!” I screamed at Kate out of frustration, in my head.
.
“Father and his wife were not home when we arrived. They got back much later and it wasn’t until later that night that my parents had invited me over to their room for the conversation…”
.
I readjusted my seat because this means that Kate had finally made it to the part I’d been dying to hear all morning.
.
“…My mother started by apologizing for ever putting pressure on me to settle down. She said that even though she’d always appeared desperate and sometimes seemed mean to me as a result, deep down her cruel actions, laid love and desire to see her daughter be fulfilled in all ramifications. She said it is every mother’s dream to be alive to give her grownup child’s hand in marriage; to carry her grandchildren when she is still very strong and capable enough to. And when none of these is happening or has any prospect of happening anytime soon, frustration sets in, sending them to say and other times, do the unthinkable…”
“…your mother said all of these?” I asked, surprised.
“…I swear, Moshood. The thing shock me too. Those were the last words I was expecting to come out of my mother’s mouth. Truth be told, all through the duration of that flight down to PH, I’d already made up my mind for the worse…”
“…and your father? What did he say in all of these?” I asked.
.
“Father was quiet all through his wife’s speech. It was not until she was done talking, that he finally spoke.”
“What did he say, K?”
“Moshood!”
“Moshood?”
“Yes, Moshood. Those were his very first words.”
