Agency sensitises community to domestic, sexual violence
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has organised a sensitisation programme for residents of Ikorodu Local Government Area on domestic and sexual violence.
The agency’s Executive Secretary, Mrs Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, in a statement made available to journalists on Monday, explained that the community has a role to play in ensuring justice for survivors of domestic and sexual violence, hence the need for awareness.
Vivour-Adeniyi, at the event held at Ikorodu Local Government secretariat’s hall, disclosed that Ikorodu is one of the top five areas with highest report of cases of domestic and sexual violence
She said, “Many people are not aware that there are consequences for their actions and that domestic and sexual violence is a crime. For example, defilement, assault, battery are crimes and so we need to orientate them on the provisions of the law and to explain to them that there are consequences for criminal actions and also the role of the community in curbing these cases.
“Many times, survivors summon courage to speak up but some people in the community gang up to silence them and so the message is ‘No’, the community has a role to believe survivors, encourage survivors to report and ensure they access justice.
“Ikorodu is very important and special to us because, in the past four years, we have had steady increase of informal and formal report of cases.”
